I just read on people.com that Kate Hudson pushed for 4.5 hours. I'm surprised they allowed her to push that long, VBAC or otherwise. Do most docs allow that much time?
It probably depends on the doctor, but I think as long as the baby is maintaining a good HR and things seem ok, they let you try for multiple hours... I pushed for hours and hours before they determined that my breech vaginal delivery was not going to happen. The OB said she let me push for as long as she did because the baby was stable. (After a point she admitted that he was just not moving down and the c/s was imminent... claiming that she had continued to let me push in order to prove to myself I had tried. Didn't make the c/s any more welcome but it does feel a smidge better knowing I tried so hard for so long.)
I pushed for 3.5 hours with my VBAC and my OB didn't seem concerned at all. I think he would have been fine with another hour of pushing if I had needed it and baby was doing well.
