Washing plush toys - wwyd?

I've been very blessed to get hand-me downs for about 85% of the things we have for DS. My question is, how do I go about cleaning the plush toys? I'm tempted to throw them in the wash, but some of them have hard parts, or there are the ones that spiral up the sides of the carseat and have hard inner parts. He's starting to be MUCH more interested in toys so I need to get on cleaning these before he sticks them in his mouth.

Maybe just throw them in the sink with some dishsoap/detergent of some sort and soak, then a few rinses?

Re: Washing plush toys - wwyd?

  • You could spray the crap out of them with febreeze then throw then in the dryer. I would think the heat from the dryer would kill bateria on them, as would the febreeze. Are these plush toys from a close friend that you know were well taken care of or some random hand me downs that you dont know what happened with them? If its some random stuff, I'd be a little leary, but thats just me.

Someone we know, a fried of SIL. They are good people, clean home, but have pets. So do we, but there's a difference between my cats hair and someone else's, especially since it is going in his mouth. I think you're right about the dryer, I will do that for sure. With the febreeze, I have a moderate allergy to scents and don't wnat to overdo it incase DS does/will as well.

  • I would hand wash with detergent and tumble dry on low or lay out in the sun to dry.  The stuffing might get messed up in the washer.

  • I've stuck soke fabric rattles and toys in the washer and dryer and they've weathered the storm just fine.  I didn't even think to hand wash...that would probably be much safer. :)
  • i've thrown all stuffed animals, fabric books, etc. in the washer and dryer and they were completely fine.

  • Certain plush toys can not be washed in a machine, be sure to read their labels. I washed some of the non-machine washable toys with a damp cloth that was lightly soaped and let them are dry. If the toys are machine washable, I would recommend using the hand wash setting and tumbling them on low in the dryer, that's what I did and her toys turned out fine.
