Babies: 9 - 12 Months

would you let your 10 mo old sleep with a burp cloth/receiving blanket?

My 10 mo old uses a burp cloth or receiving blanket as his paci. He sucks/chews on it. Plus he's teething so I think it feels good. I let him sleep with one during nap, but I've been adamant that he not have one at night due to the risks. Sometimes we let him fall asleep with it and then try to slip it away. Do you let yours sleep with one at night?

  • My DS slept with a crotched (sp?) blanket in the beginning. He has been sleeping with a regular blanket for about 2 months now. He loves it and snuggles up to it.

So, I would say yes. I would think at 10 months your little one with be fine with something that isn't terribly heavy.

  • Call me a bad parent but at 11 months old we let Katie sleep with 2 blankets, 1 giant 'lovie', and 2 smaller 'lovies'.

She's old enough now to play peek-a-boo and move a blanket off her head so I'm sure she can do that at night if she needs to.

  • DD1 slept with a receiving blanket since about 4-5 months. She never chewed on it, just sucked her thumb while holding it.

DD2 has a small blankie that she's been sleeping with since around the same age.

  • Yes, DD uses her burp cloths as her "blankie" for some reason.  She chews on them as well.  Yes, she sometimes sleeps with them, a blanket and a teddy bear.  I am not worried.

  • My DS's burp cloth is like his lovey... Tonight he literally cried for 15 minutes until I finally realized that THAT was what he wanted. He holds it while he's falling asleep, nursing or just being cuddly. He always sleeps with one and I didn't realize there wasn't one in his crib. FWIW he also always sleeps with a blanket on him at night. He rolls and moves all over the place and can move his head away from it should he turn to lay on his tummy (which he doesn't like to do).

    Yes.

This is how I found him not 5 minutes after I put him in bed Sunday evening. He was tired to say the least! He is old enough now that he can easily move any type of blanket or lovie from his face.

  • Your 10 month old is old enough to remove the blanket from his face if need be.

My guys have been sleeping with sensory blankies and a stuffed animal since 5.5 months.

ok, mine sleeps with a pillow too. i'm really bad.

  • Thanks ladies - I gave him one last night because his teeth were bothering him so bad. Poor baby. :(

  • I have wanted to but I have been afraid.  Maybe it is ok?  DD is very mobile so I doubt she would ever get stuck with something on her head.  I wanted to start letting her sleep with her Minnie Mouse but I thought I should wait until a year.

  • Yes, he has 2 regular blankets in his crib. One at both ends. He somehow manages to move from one to the other, he pulls them over him too! He's never ended up with one over his face.

  • I think people worry to much about stuff like this.  My DD has had a blanket in her crib since she has been sleeping in the crib at around 2 months.  She didn't move around as much then and I usually only put it over the bottom half of her.  She has a few lovies in her crib too.
  • He sleeps with a small afghan every night, and for naps at home. He also has a stuffed monkey in his crib, and he occasionally ends up in the crib with a burp rag because he happens to be clutching it when he has his bottle and we can't get it away from him.
  • S has slept with a blanket since she was a baby and just recently began pulling it up by her face at night, I would go check on her and would move it down but I would find her this way every morning. So yes I would/do let mine sleep with one.

  • Yes.  I would not worry about it.

  • C has slept with a blankie in his crib since he was 4 months because he was already rolling around so much he always wound up on his stomach.

  • LO has had his muslin Aden & Anais lovey since 6 months old.  He loves to suck and chew on it.  I often find him crawling around his crib with it dangling out of his mouth.  As PPs have said.  If your LO has neck control, is able to roll over, is able to sit up unassisted, and is able to remove things from his/her face then I would think a burp cloth/receiving blanket is ok in the crib.
  • DS has had a blanket forever. I could never sleep the way "they" say babies should. I don't expect my kid to either.

Lillypants was getting attached to burp rags but I was too candy pants to let her sleep with them, so I got the Aden + Anais issie lovies. They're similar in texture/feel, but they're breathable. She's slept with them for maybe 4 months now.

  • Logan's slept with a crocheted blanket since he was 6 months old. He won't sleep without it.

    Works for us!

  • Ellie has a small blanket that she sleeps with. She likes to wrap her fists in it and then rub it on her face.

The "risks" subside exponentially once your LO is able to control his head, pull blankets off and on. I don't think you have anything to worry about.

My DS has slept with a receiving blanket since he figured out how to wiggle out of his swaddle around 4 months.

  • Yeah, he loves those waffle gerber blankets. The texture is nice, plus they are light weight. He definitely sucks on it at night! He spoons it too.
  • Abigail sleeps with a blanket, so yes.  That's his lovey...I would totally let him sleep with it.
  • both dd's have slept with a small blanket and lovey since the very beginning so yeah I think yours is gonna be ok

  • yes.  my DD has slept with a blanket since she was about 4-5 months old.  She snuggles it.  keeps her comfortable.

Bwaaahahahahaha THIS! 10 months is totally fine! I gave DS a blanket as soon as he could roll both ways and knew to pull it off his face if he needed to.
