Chocolate + GD

Can you have any with GD?  I failed my 3 hour last week, my number was 140 and they say that anything 140 and up is a fail at my docs so I've been trying to follow the diet so far but I miss my chocolate :(  I meet with my doctor and a nutricianist on Thursday so hopefully that will shed more light on what I should be doing.

Re: Chocolate + GD

  • I would throw it in as an evening snack, maybe with a glass of milk or something.  I'm allowed 15-30g carbs for a snack and a glass of milk is somewhere around 15g I think.  So you'd have to find a square of chocolate for 15g carbs or so.  Of course, you probably shouldn't make that a snack every day, it probably would not be good for your ketones.  My nutritionists and ob are pretty laid back so things like a chocolate treat in moderation is fine with them.

  • To satisfy chocolate cravings, you can either have a teeny tiny bit (within your carb range) for a snack once in a while, or look for snacks that have a little chocolate in them. Fiber One 90 calorie bars are 17g carbs per bar, come in a chocolate variety, and the fiber helps control the blood sugar rise, so it's a win win :)

  • When I had GD, I was able to eat chocolate as my evening snack with a protein. I'd usually eat a handful of peanuts or string cheese first. I was able to have 1/2 cup of ice cream, a few Hershey Kisses or 2 small chocolate chip cookies. There was no way I could have lived w/o my chocolate either!
  • I was told as long as it was within my carb allowance it's fine.  So, if you want it as your snack I guess I would have it and then test an hour later and see how it affects you.

  • I'm not sure what your carb allowance is for snacks. Mine is 30. Hershey bars with almonds have 21 carbs and 4 grams of protein. I usually eat a handful of nuts along with it to get a little more protein.

I was told this as well. I have to make sure I pay attention to serving size and all that, but I don't deny myself if it's within my limits. :)

  • I sub the Kashi Go Lean bars for my bedtime snack or mini luna bars for the snacks during the day if necessary and these seem to help curb the chocolate fix.  I tried the klondike bars, but those were "too much like candy" according to one of the nurses and sneaking even the slightest bit of chocolate syrup on my ice cream at night unfortunately backfired on me.
  • A couple of times, I've had one serving of ice cream for my bedtime snack. It's always been neopalitan. My fasting number the next morning has been awesome. I don't know why!

  • Someone on here recently mentioned the 100 calorie packs of cocoa almonds.  I tried them yesterday and they are delicious!  As far as other sweets go, my nutritionist says that i can have ice cream every night as long as it is skinny cow or the 1/2 fat VANILLA.  I usually have a large scoop of vanilla with some fruit, peanut butter and walnuts on it.  My morning numbers have never been higher than 84.  Thanks goodness because this woman needs ice cream!!!
  • Thanks so much for the suggestions!!!  I don't test so I'm not sure how all of that works maybe after I see the doctor they will tell me to do that but at the moment they're just having me follow the diet that they mailed me and I didn't see chocolate on it anywhere, must've been a typo Stick out tongue
