What to do about furniture?!

DS will be 22 months when the baby comes. We had bought him a lifetime crib... would you buy the new baby a lifetime crib also or would you give the baby his furniture and buy him a big boy bed??

If you would buy him a big boy bed where do you recommend getting it from? I was in love with the PBK boat bed but my mom talked me down from that.

 TIA!!!

  • Nicholas is 28 months old and still in the crib.  I saw no reason to give the new baby his crib.  She got her own crib and own furniture.

  • I would get a second crib. Personally, I would like knowing my toddler is safe in his bed, and not potentially roaming the house. Some LOs are ready for a toddler bed at that age, but I would like the safeguard a crib provides.

One thought is to get a less expensive crib for the baby. When DS is ready for a toddler bed, the baby gets the existing nursery furniture, and DS gets new furniture.

Or, another thought (sorry, I'm full of "good ideas" tonight), if the kids may ever need to share a room, you could get the same or matching furniture.

Good luck deciding what to do!

  • Dylan didn't try to climb out until 28 months and Jace made it longer than that.

The way I see it - juggling a toddler and a newborn is tough.  Especially since you're usually physically tied down nursing/feeding and changing first thing in the AM.

I felt so much better knowing Dylan was contained and safe while I delt with the baby.

And... I really didn't want to push too much change on him just because WE decided to have another kid, KWIM?  It was tough enough without forcing him into a bed when the crib was still working just fine.

I'm not a fan of head and footboards in kids rooms (trust me - mine injure themselves on the frame alone so I can't imagine the blood and bruises I'd be seeing with head and footboards in place).

My vote is super cheap 2nd crib.  Ikea has some for under $100.  You'll probably use a 2nd crib for less than a year but I've got to tell you that it was worth every stinkin' penny to us!!!

    GL!

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
  • We will get a baby new stuff. Isabel has a convertible crib and matching dresser. We bought it with the intent of our child keeping the same stuff until they move out and want to buy something else.... I will sooo buy bunk beds if my kid(s) want them though, I wanted them so bad when I was younger:)~We just took off the front part of DDs crib and added the toddler rail, it will turn into a full size bed one day.

Something to think about is, do you have enough safety stuff up in your home to make sure everything is safe if your LO gets out of bed while you are sleeping. Also, if you get you DS a big boy bed he will also need a new mattress, box-springs and bedding.

Of course in the end it's up to you but, for us each kid will get new furniture that will grow with them!

  • I would keep him in the crib. My nieces are 23 months apart. My sister moved the oldest to a toddler bed when she was pregnant and she went from a great sleeper to a child that took forever to go to sleep and was constantly out of her bed.

DD is 25 months old and still in her crib. I'm not pregnant right now, and we have decided that we're not going to move her until 2.5 at the earliest, probably closer to 3 as long as she's content in there. She has climbed out of the crib once, but I remind her that she has to stay in her crib until mommy or daddy come to get her and that has worked.

I would do as everyone else has suggested and get a cheap crib for the baby. Then move your DS when you feel he's ready for a big boy bed.

  • I would keep both in cribs as long as possible.  :)  However, DD doesn't have a set of furniture - she has a dresser and dressing table from a great-aunt's house, a dresser from a grandmother's house, an antique child rocker and antique adult rocker, and a bookshelf DH made for her.  Plus her Graco crib.  :)  So I would have no problem getting another Graco crib for a second baby and combining it with the other random dresser set we have from another old lady's house (our house is going to sink under the weight of dressers).

And ditto Howley on headboard/footboards being a great way to knock out teeth.

This. His little world is going to be turned upside down. No need to mess with his sleep! We are just now considering switching dd1's crib to a toddler bed because she's started chewing on it again.
