February 2012 Moms

When did your doc set your due date?

I was under the impression that I would get an estimated due date at my first appt which was at 8w4d.

He did not tell me anythign about EDD and I spaced out and did not ask. I figured out what it will be using the many online due date calculators.

I will be sure to ask about that at my next appt in 3 weeks but wanted to know when you all were given your EDD?

ps. I am on an expat assignment for work abroad right now and dealing with a French doc so not sure if that's just how they do this here or if it's the same in the US and you don't find out till later when the baby is bigger. 1st prego for me so I am clueless.

Re: When did your doc set your due date?

  • If you were not charting and have not had a dating u/s (which is really not as common as it sounds on this site), then your doc is most likely going by your LMP (which is what the online calculators are doing).

Most likely they will continue going by that date until they are given a reason otherwise.  It is very much the common practice.

  • I have been charting and when I used the online calculator I used my LMP so I know the "unofficial" date. My question is - when is the doc going to confirm it? He did not mentiona anything during the visit. They have to tell you something at some point right? Was the 1st appt too early?? I was expectign him to use my LMP and give me an estimate. Maybe he forgot.
  • I wouldn't stress about it.  Pregnancy is a long ride.  I would just ask him at your next apt...and make sure to tell him you were charting!  That date is going to be much more accurate than going by your LMP.

At my first appointment according to my LMP it was one day but measuring the baby he came up with another date. I just went to my second appointment yesterday and baby was measuring 2 days ahead then previous date given but we're sticking with the last EDD because he doesn't switch them unless baby would have been measuring extremely ahead.

  • Great! Thanks girls!
  • My doc gave me mine at my 1st u/s (9w 3d). But you could def just call and ask, I am sure they wrote it down.

Most US doctors will base it on the first day of your LMP.  I was actively charting with temps and OPKs when I got pregnant so I was able to tell my Dr the day that I ovulated. Because it made just a huge difference in my due date (about a week) my Dr went with my O date to determine my due date.

  • I had an appointment to confirm the pregnancy at 6 weeks according to my LMP. They told me when I was due using that, but when I had my first ultrasound, they told me I was due eight days later and they're using that since early ultrasound accurate to within a couple of days.

My doc went by my LMP and the u/s measurements.  They both equal Feb 4th for me.  He said at my last appt that "we'll stick with the 4th" for now.  So...the 4th it is unless something drastically changes.

  • My doctor said essentially the same thing as PP. They base your initial due date on your LMP.  Then when you have your first u/s they might change it.

  • When I had my first u/s, she measured from 2 angles, and came up with a span of about 3 days.  She picked the latest day as my due date (because first babies often come late), but said that at the 20 week u/s it would be easier to get a date.  I'm still using my LMP due date, because I'm fairly sure I O'd on day 14, I had already set up my ticker and things, and because the one she gave me was only a day past the one I was using.

  • My doc set my EDD on the day I went in to have them confirm pregnancy... but I'd already calculated it myself from charting -- O-date plus 38 weeks. The doctor confirmed my methods, agreed with my evaluation of when I ovulated, and set my "official" EDD to the date I gave her.

I'm guessing your doctor calculated the EDD and just forgot to tell you. :) But if you know when you O'd, you can figure it out yourself from that! (Much better than your LMP date!)

And when we went today they changed our due date from February 14th to March 14th! I knew my cycles were wacky, I just didn't realize they were THAT wacky.
