Success after IF

Need help with solids

DS2 spent a couple hours in the ER last week after having an allergic reaction to a Gerber jar (98% sure it was pears and raspberries). He hates bananas, peaches, and apricots. The only things he tolerates are veggies, apples, and pears. He acts as though formula is no longer enough. He wakes up every couple hours during the night to eat. I try to mix oatmeal and rice cereal into everything but I am scared to death to give him something that is going to make him really sick. I truly need more tips/ ideas. Please help!

  • Is it too early to try dairy - yogurt etc.? He's probably old enough for the meat blends too and that would give him some protein to fill him up.

As for the reaction, I would switch to an organic brand  - like Earth's Best, Happy Baby, Ella's Kitchen - these don't have any additives etc. so if he does have a reaction, you know its the food not the other "stuff" (preservatives etc.).

That sounds really scary - I'd be nervous to try new things too.  Maybe your Dr. can refer you to a GI Dr. or an allergy Dr. and you can start testing so you'll know what to avoid.

  • I'm sorry he had a reaction!

I took DS to the allergist after a reaction to a medication.  The allergist was in the HRH medical office building.  Very nice, tested for lots of things while we were there based on exposure and family history.  He was just over a year old at the time.

I second trying Earth's best baby food.  I could usually get it for the same price as gerber and I was happy knowing that the only ingredients were the food and sometimes water to thin it.

Could all of the extra feedings at night be a growth spurt or is this a regular thing?

It's a regular thing. Last night he had 12 oz total. A "meal" at 11pm and another at 4am. I think I'm going to start back up at making my own baby food and supplementing with the one's suggested above. Anyone else have any suggestions on how to fill him up before bed?
