Flying questions for you (ETA all my questions)

We're flying this weekend and here are the details that are needed for my questions:
bought 3 seats and will ride with B on my lap. (4 of us total)
T is 3 yrs, B is 1 yr

We're planning to bring 1 sippy of juice for T and 2 of milk for B. I'm bringing some of the Plum Organic pouches https://www.plumorganics.com/for_tots_mish_mash.php for B also- I have 5 in a 1 qt bag.

Dh is having his own 1 qt bag with his toiletries, and I'll have one too. I'm thinking T will have one too, possibly. Do you think we could bring the pouches as B's 1 qt bag- could he have one if he doesn't have a ticket?
Do I have to put my foundation, mascara, deodorant (I use what I consider 'normal' stick deodorant- not gel)?
Can I put my Badger Balm anti-bug balm in my carry on, or does it need to be in a qt baggie?
Also, I have a solid butter cream lotion (looks like a bar of soap)- that's ok just in my bag, right?

I'm being paranoid here, but I really just want it to go as smooth as possible with the 2 kids in tow and we've never flown with the kids before.

Any toys to make sure to stay clear from bringing with us??  (what about playdoh?)

Re: Flying questions for you (ETA all my questions)

  • From TSA's website:

Medications, baby formula and food, breast milk, and juice are allowed in reasonable quantities exceeding 3.4 ounces (100ml) and are not required to be in the zip-top bag. Officers may ask travelers to open these items to conduct additional screening and passengers should declare them for inspection at the checkpoint.

So you should be okay with the Plum Organics pouches and sippies. They aren't required to be in a plastic bag and don't "count" towards your allowance, but I'd say keeping them in a bag will make it easier for you.  They may ask you to taste what is in the sippy cups.

If it's a solid it doesn't need to go in.  So... stick deodorant, concealer stick, badger balm, solid lotion - no.  I would say yes for the mascara, lip gloss, liquid foundation.

Just allow yourselves plenty of time.  Try to be pleasant and cooperative with the security guards.  Take time before you line up for security check to make sure you have your liquids, etc situated so you can remove them easily for screening.

I'd skip the play-doh to be safe.  Take stickers, puppets, books.

Also, LOs will need to be removed from carriers before going through the scanner.

    Hope that helps!  Good luck!

  • THank you!  I know Im being crazy but I just get nervous that I'll cause trouble or bring something that will make me mad to lose. (dh has had this happen before and lost very expensive cologne even though it was in a bag and the correct size- I was mad at him for that! haha)

  • Actually, they're not allowed to ask you to taste anything anymore (according to the TSA agents I've worked with). The juice, milk, and baby food won't count towards anything. You're allowed to bring as much of that stuff as you want. The catch is that they have the right to ask you to open any and everything to test it for bomb stuff. They don't dip anything in your liquid. They just wave a strip of paper (like litmus paper) over or around the bottle. Then they spray it with some stuff that I don't know what the heck it is.

That said, I've never had a problem going through security with tons of liquids for DS. You have to declare them. As you're going through security just say "Hi, I'd like you to know I have liquid for my baby." You have to pull them out of your bags and put them in their own box to get x-rayed. I've been able to convince them not to make me open stuff most of the time. Sometimes they'll just wipe down the outside with the testing paper. Once I was able to let them trade giving me a pat down for testing it. I don't know exactly how that worked.... I just tell them I'd prefer not to open this bottle because of X, Y, and Z and ask if there's any other way to test it. I frequently take those little Horizon milk boxes that don't have to be refrigerated and hate opening them.

I fly a lot. And I fly with DS a lot. I've always had good experiences with security. Be forewarned that if you take a stroller they will ask you to fold it up and put it through the x-ray machine. You'll have to take the kids shoes off too. I've never been through the body scanner. Just nicely told them I'd like to abstain. Sometimes they give me a pat down sometimes they don't. They've never tried to give DS a pat down. The pat downs I've gotten were totally fine.

Anything that's more liquid than solid will need to be in a zip lock excluding baby food and liquid (all your sippys and stuff).  If it's in a stick form you won't have to put it in a ziplock. Good luck!

  • I know it's not as cost effective, but you might be better off bringing empty sippy cups and then buying some juice and milk once you are past security. That way you won't have to worry about taking it through security, or anything spilling and making a mess, or it sitting out of a fridge for a long period of time.
