My lo is showing real interest in cups/glasses lately and I've hear that babies can be taught to drink from a cup, so I'm wondering if it would be better to just go straight to a cup? Obviously it would be messier, but I wonder if it would be better for our bfing relationship? Anyone done this? By the way, she's not drinking anything but breastmilk right now and we're delaying solids until about 6 months. Maybe she'll get a little tiny taste of water then.

Re: anyone skip the sippy and go straight for the cup?
My LO has refused a bottle since 5 weeks, despite huge efforts to make him take one. Anyway, he grabbed my cup from me about 10 times before I just let him have a few sips of water & he did well. He's actually better with regular cups than the sippy cups we've tried the past 2 or 3 weeks.
Its a huge mess sometimes, but I always have at least one hand on it unless its empty. If I didn't I'm sure he'd be wearing the entire contents of the cup. I've also started using the bottle lids (the cap that goes over the nipple) because they're smaller, lighter, have a slope that makes drinking easier, & can be sterilized. He honestly takes a maximum of 1.5 oz at any sitting via a cup. I'm not getting my hopes up that it'll replace BF anytime soon, but I'd rather wait it out than have to buy a ton of really expensive sippy cups that he'll use for maybe a couple weeks.
yes, I gave my daughter a cup regularly at about 8 months, she went through a dumping phase at about 14months stage (totally normal I taught her to clean it up and she got over it and drank really well by 16 months) The biggest suggestion is start with very small amounts like 1 ounce, with a very young baby like yours it may be better to use less.

Little Rose is 2 1/2.
Just want to echo pp. I have never given DD a sippy and she does really well just drinking from it. She can also (and have been able to since 10 months) drink well from a bottle, i.e. a 'grown up bottle'. Just keep a hand on the glass and she will do well :-)
LO refused a bottle from the get go. I bought a Doidy cup and he took to it right away, he's 7 months.
Bay doesn't get expressed milk often but we've used a Doidy cup since she was tiny. It is easier for them because they use the same movement as with breastfeeding. Bay picked it up right away.
Now that she's older she thinks it's funny to dump it out but she can easily drink from cups. There are videos of babies using them on Youtube and I did a blog post about them here.
ETA: I plan on buying these once she is more careful. They're tempered glass so they are fairly durable and glass is the safest thing to drink from. They're perfect for tiny hands!
No sippie cups here. We bought a little cappuccino cup for S to drink water out of. It's the perfect size, lol. He does pretty well and understands how to tip it, but it will spill if we're not helping a bit.
You could also teach your LO to drink out of a straw, which is surprisingly easy. Trap some liquid in the straw and hold it above them, then slowly drop the liquid in their mouth, and they will figure out how to suck on it. After a few times of "baby bird"-ing, put the straw back in the cup (like normal) and voila! baby drinking from a straw

We don't plan to use a sippy cup, as we avoid plastic when possible. I hope to just stick to glasses, but I am not against a stainles steel sports bottle if we need to go that route at some point. Here is LO's first try with a cup a couple of weeks ago (6 months old). He spilled on himself, but he got some water in, too. A curved lip like this glass has is helpful for getting the liquid out without tipping it over so much.
