3 different carriers - infant insert for ergo necessary?

Hi ladies, I'm popping over from the Sept. board to ask a quick question.  I figured you would be the best ones to answer it.

I have 3 carriers:  ergo, moby wrap, and a ring sling

I'm debating on whether it's worth buying the infant insert for the ergo, or if I'd be ok using the moby and/or ring sling until LO is big enough (has adequate head head control) to go in the ergo without the insert.

Thanks!

  • I didn't use a SSC until H was about 6months, so we didn't need an insert anyways.  I would prefer the moby and ringsling, but if you do want to use the ergo, I think some people roll a receiving blanket to provide some support.  At least then you don't have to purchase an extra thing.

It's sort of a personal preference. If you're comfortable with the moby and/or RS, then it will absolutely work. My DH prefers SSC, so if it were me, I'd need the insert so that DH could/would carry LO.

This! We got a lot of use out of our Ergo insert, but it was the coolest way to carry LO and walk the dog ... she was born in April, so it was summer, and there was no way I was wrapping us up in the Moby, and I needed two truly free hands for the dog (so, no ring sling). Plus, DD isn't that tall, so we used the booster pillow out of the insert until she was 7 or 8 months old.

  • You can get by without it but I used my Ergo every day since my daughter was 1 day of. She would immediately calm down and get sleepy when I put her in the insert, it was awesome and I was sad when she outgrew it (although she still loves being the Ergo).

Those are the same three that I have and I prefer the RS and Moby right now (DS is 11 weeks).  You can use the ERGO without the insert which is what I did but you have to swaddle.  I used the Aden and Anais blankets because they were thin.  I wouldn't waste your money on the insert.

It's not so much about swaddling as it is about head support. You can get by without the insert by rolling up towels/blankets around LO, but the important thing is that the head is supported and he doesn't go chin to chest in a slumped position.
