I buy most at second hand stores. I find a lot of barely used if not new clothes there for Alice. I've found some great stuff for half the price. Most of the cutesy is picked first so I've found a lot of unique things for her.
we have a lot of gap and old navy clothes for Andrew.
Baby Boy Born 3.15.11. 8lb 9oz, 21.75in.
6 month stats: 20lb 11oz (92%tile), 30.12in.(100%tile - who knew it went over 99th? Which means 100% of other 6 month olds are shorter than mine!)
I know what you mean about the cutesy stuff. Carter's is great, but all their clothes have that cutesy thing that I'm not a big fan of...things written on onesies, bright colors, smiling animals of all sorts, etc.
I loooove Baby Gap clothes but they're not the cheapest. I got several onesies from them plus leggings, dresses, and a couple shirts. Old Navy is okay, too.
I buy stuff almost exclusively at second hand stores, unless I see something just too cute to not buy it I'm with you about not being into 'too cutsey' clothes ...

I find a lot of designer stuff (Ralph Lauren for one) at TJ Maxx/ Marshalls/ Ross type stores. They still have Carters, etc, but it's a huge variety for pretty cheap.
i love carters but for non cutesy things i get the Gerber onesies from Target. i do love the cutesy stuff but i'm glad i was team green while pregnant because little girl stuff is the cutest
My MIL has been buying my son clothes from Hartstrings (you can shop online). They are crazy expensive but offer some great clearance prices. He looks so preppy in their clothes - I love it!
I know what you mean by cutesy. And why does everything have a monkey on it?
