Co-sleeping and blankets

I've co-slept with all of 4 of my kids, so obviously that means they've been in/around blankets.

The SIDS guidelines state NO BLANKETS AT ALL. On the toddler board, I saw that it was apparently very common for some people to not give their child a blanket until well past 18mos, some up to 2yos.

I'm assuming most of those who didn't give their lo's a blanket did not co-sleep either.

So for those of you that do co-sleep, do you let your lo's have a blanket when they are on their own?

I don't remember what the post was originally about, but I think I was the only one who was ok with leaving a blanket in with them... started to make me feel like I might as well tuck a python snake into bed with my kids :|

Re: Co-sleeping and blankets

  • When you have a baby in the bed you should always have blankets and pillows as far away from them as possible. My son does like a blanket now, but he is about to be 14 months.

  • I didn't use a blanket when I had co-sleeping babies.  I just wore warm jammies.

  • No blankets on her own until she was old enough to be able to move them out of her way.  She hates getting tangled in them, though, so generally doesn't like them.

Yeah, that I do anyway, but I guess I was just surprised to hear how long people wait before giving a blanket.

  • I covered DD in an A&A blanket per my pediatrician's instructions until she started grabbing it and pulling it over her face in her sleep.

I do use my normal comforter when we co-sleep.  I just keep it on the lower part of our bodies.

  • I put DS under the covers with me when we co-sleep. I did this from very early on. I would just drape my arm over him and hold them in place around his waist. I am a very light sleeper and wake up in the same position I fall asleep in (always have, even before DS was born), so I wasn't worried about the covers somehow moving up over his head.

However, he starts the night out in his crib and I don't put any blankets in with him. I have a couple of times, but he moves around a lot in his sleep and ends up getting his feet tangled up in the blanket and waking up. Plus, I sleep a lot better knowing there is nothing in there with him.

    ditto.

when they're in a crib far from you, i think it is more worrisome for them to have a blanket.  you aren't going to be there to notice if they get tangled or stuck, so i can imagine that might play into it a bit.

  • I'm another blanket mom. It's true, there are not very many of us.

When I brought home a 5lb 2oz 35 week gestational age baby that couldn't keep his temp up (I am still surprised they let us leave, I think it was only because I am an RN and swore I would take his temp every 4 hours at home), the kid was wrapped in blankets and had blankets piled on him. You know that Boppy Newborn Napper? He slept in that, curled in a ball, and hardly moved for the first month. We made sure to keep his face clear of blankets, and since we were freaked about having a preemie at home anyways, DH or I checked on him about once an hour for the first couple weeks. LO never covered his face or tried to bury it, or I would have forced the sleep sack instead of blankets.

Fast forward, and here we are. LO still gets covered from the waist down in a lightweight blanket every night. He also sleeps in a fleecy sleeper, and kicks the blanket off most nights.

When we bedshare, our sheets/blanket are pulled down a bit, so they won't go up past LO's waist. Pillows are moved to the side. Generally LO sleeps in the crook of my arm, up against me- so I don't use a pillow at all.

I'm sure I've been judged for announcing being a blanket mom before, but that is okay. It worked for us, given the situation. It continues to work for us now that LO can flip and turn and lift without issue when he is in the crib.
