Does your baby actually look at/enjoy books?

... because mine hates them.  :(  I've tried going through a few designed for babies (bright contrasting colours, etc) and he'll have none of it.  Starts crying a page or two in.

I see that its a part of a lot of your bedtime routines - does your LO actually look at the pages/enjoy books already?

As a teacher, I'm having trouble dealing with this... it's something I know will become part of our bedtime routine when he's older - I just haven't included it yet because it makes him upset.

Tell me about your LO and books (second time moms welcome!)

She really doesn't pay any attention.  At this point, if I read to her, I just read from my book (currently on a Lorraine Snelling kick).  She doesn't know the difference, and I don't go crazy.  Bedtime books aren't part of our routine, though I plan on adding them once she seems interested.

Oh this makes me feel better!

  • Our pedi said it doesn't matter what you read to LO, just read to them. We read Eric Carle books. Some nights DD looks at the pictures, but most the time she just snuggles while we read.

  • My son loves them, but they have to have large, bright photos. I have about 4 of the "Touch and Feel" books, like kitties, puppies, wild animals. I don't read to him, I just show him the pi Tues and let him feel some of the soft stuff in them. He'll coo and smile to them.

I dont show the pictures to her. Right now I read to while she is taking her last bottle. I think she just likes the sound of me reading. I am a teacher also so I use a lot of voice when I read.

I dont think it matters if they interested now, it just needs to be part of the routine. You cant wait till they are 9 months and then try to read at night, they wont get it.

She does! She especially loves Barnyard Dance by Sandra Boynton. I haven't been reading books to her at night though. She's usually too fussy in the evening. I read to her during the day, either while we're playing or before her morning nap. Maybe you could give that a try and see if he likes books better during the day?

  • Some days DD shows interest in books and others not so much. She usually enjoys number counting books. It could be the way I count and the tone of my voice but that seems to get the most of her attention.

We mostly read during the day. When she is older I hope to add it to the nightly bedtime routine.

Hmm, maybe I should go back to reading him the Harry Potter books like I did when I was pregnant :)

  • Books come later.  Your baby will be loving books and eating them and ripping them up and scribbling all over them before you know it. :)

  • DS doesn't hate being read to but he doesn't get into it either. Or at least he doesn't get into the baby books. If I just read something random aloud, that can be very soothing, especially after a bottle. And he will sometimes enjoy staring at a particular page of a baby book while laying on his back with it propped up next to him. He'll start gurgling at it.

I have the best luck keeping his attention with poetry and during the day. Not sure why.

I'm a librarian, so I can also relate to really finding this important, but there's just so much novelty we're all trying to fit in, parents and babies both. Trying to not worry about it.

  • we don't read at bedtime yet. she's not really interested in books. we have 1 of those little crinkly picture books that have 3 pages with bright colors. i read that to her every time we do tummy time and yesterday is the first time she actually stared at it and acted interested. otherwise, no, she doesn't care for them yet.

  • She doesn't seem to look at the books but does enjoy being read to.

Our 7-year old reads sometimes and she loves that. She usually doesn't make it through the entire book before she gets distracted, but I figure starting early will help her interest.

I started reading to my 7-year old as soon as she was placed in my home and she still loves us to read to her, even though she needs the practice. :)

  • Our LO loves books! If she is fussy I will read to her from whatever book I am currently reading (accents and all haha) and she calms right down. Last week I was reading from an Italian Lonely Planet book and she LOVED that!

She loves storytime too, she looks at the pictures of any book and will sit there happily as we read to her. We try to read to her at least once a day. Dr. Seuss is one of her favourites.

  • DD loves the Sandra Boynton board books, but this is new for her. She just became interested in the past week or two. She like banging on the pages and can get excited if there's a page with lots of colors etc.  Right now though, they're mostly a tool to help me talk quietly to her when we're trying to do a calm activity right before sleeping.

  • I've only read to LO a couple times.  She likes the sound of my voice but hasn't shown any interest in the books themselves yet.  I was reading to her from my Nook when she was drowsing today, so I don't think it matters what I read at this point.
