Babies: 0 - 3 Months

naps

I've heard about well rested babies sleep better at night. Mine just won't nap during the day, only cat naps (20 min tops). I'm trying something different to make him sleep. This time he slept 40 min. is that better? what should be a "good" nap?

Re: naps

  • I'm dealing with the same problem lots of days. My Pedi said they should get at least 45 minutes of nap time each time. Sometimes they sleep for 2 1/2 -3 hours, but lots of days they are so fussy they only sleep for 30 minutes and then fussing again.

  • My DD takes short naps as well, but generally more like your better nap...40 min. But over the last few days she's taken a few of an hour or more. Better rested babies do nap better, and sleep better at night, and getting overtired is a huge culprit in making naps short and bedtime difficult. I have gotten DD to sleep longer for naps by keeping her awake time very short - usually only 40 min between waking up for the day and her first nap, and then usually an 50-60 min per awake period after that. As she has gotten longer naps, I can stretch it to 60-75 min. They say a "good" nap has to be at least 45 min long, and your LO shouldn't wake up screaming bloody murder.  We also improved naps by making them all in her crib, with blackout curtains, and very loud white noise.

Some kids are shorter nappers than others (my DS never took an hour and a half nap until 6 months), and some of that is biological, but you should be able to encourage at least 40-45 min naps by managing awake time.

  • It depends on the time of day with LO. He typically takes 45 min naps in the morning and then maybe 1.5-2 hours in the afternoon. I don't know if the little guy is just tired or what, but he's been sleeping almost all day for the past two days. He usually goes down for the night between 9:30-11pm and he'll STTN until 5:30 or 6am, and then sleeps until 8 or 8:30am.

  • LO went through a phase a few weeks ago where he was taking short naps like your LO.  Now he does a few 1 hr naps and one long (2+ hrs) nap each day.  I was just reading in the book, Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child, that some babies are born to be cat nappers.  You might want to check that book out, it might give you some suggestions.
