Anybody making baby food yet?

I know I'm a little early with the question yet....

But when is everyone going to start making baby food, if you plan on making your own. My garden is starting to put out produce like you wouldn't believe, and I would like to make baby food out of all the fruits and veggies, being that it's free.

Can I make baby food now, and freeze it until DD is ready to eat solids or puree's?

Any good websites or recipes to share with us?

TIA! Smile

  • Williams Sonoma has a great book on healthy foods, when you can feed them what and mix-ins for different flavors. It's a little pricey at $20 for a baby cookbook, but I think it's totally worth it and plan on using it a lot!

I also plan on purchasing the book Start Fresh (by Tyler Florence... I think) once LO starts on solids.

  • We plan to do Baby-Led Weaning.  If you were going to try this, you could just freeze the produce and prepare as you usually would when ready to start solids!

  • Thanks, ladies! All great ideas!

kacelle - Never heard of Baby-Led Weaning.... I'll have to read more into it. Thanks!

  • We are going to do babyled weaning as well. Skipping purees altogether. They caused nothing but issues with DS.

However, I don't see why you couldn't start freezing now! I would also check weelicious.com.

  • I just bought some ice cube trays for this purpose and intend to start making and freezing food in them when we get back from vacation.  I figure fresh organic produce from the farmers market when its in season is as good as it will get for base materials!  Somebody lent us one of those all-in-one baby food makers but I may just use our regular steamer and food processor, then freeze the small ice cube portions in freezer bags.

  • I'm planning on introducing solids at about 6 or 7 months. I've been using the book "Cooking for Baby" by Lisa Barnes as a base for what I want to do for DD. Its easy to read, lots of pictures, recipes, and great practical tips for storage, recognizing food allergies, and introduction timeline for different types of foods. I really like it so far. Also, I read on one website to use breastmilk when you start to make puree to help with the taste transitition.
