WWYD - PPD Skin Test

Hey ladies! I start a new job next week and they require a PPD skin test (checks for tuberculosis). I've done a bunch of research on this and everything I've read says it's safe in pregnancy, but something about it still puts me really ill at ease to the point where I'm not sure I'm comfortable doing it.

I won't be ready to out the pregnancy to them when I start, so I'm curious what you would do- suck it up/stop being paranoid and take it since there's no evidence it's harmful, or try to hedge?

  • I guess for me it would depend on what the test entails. What do they do exactly? I've never had one.

  • I'm pretty sure it's ok. I would double check with the Dr's office that does the test though. It's just a subcutaneous test isn't it?

  • I just had to do a TB test a couple of weeks back to get re-hired as a teacher. Like you I felt very uneasy, so I asked HR if they'd be willing to accept results from a blood test, which they did. I did tell HR that I was pregnant and that's why I preferred taking the blood test, but I know they couldn't technically inform my principal. It took like an extra 2 days for the blood results to come back.

  • One of my fellow teacher friends had to have TB test while she was pregnant and it worked out fine.  But I would definitely talk to you Dr. about it first to get some extra reassurance.

It's an injection. Depending on your skin's reaction to it, they can tell whether you're infected. This explains it better: https://www.cdc.gov/tb/publications/factsheets/testing/skintesting.htm

Thanks, I'm definitely planning on that! It is just subcutaneous.

Oh that's good to know, I didn't realize a blood test was an option. Thanks!!

  • PPD= Purified Protein Derivative. A nurse takes an itty bitty teeny tiny needle and injects a few drops just underneath the top layer of your skin. There is no actual TB in it; your body will just react a certain way if you have or have had TB.

Sure, check with your OB, but its not as scary as it sounds :)

  • I am a HR Coordinator for a Healthcare company and we do not require our pregnant employees (new or current) to have their annual TB skin test done.  They do, however, have to fill out a specific form that states that they are pregnant, their due date and if they will be breastfeeding.  This protects us and the company *should* anything happen.

If they choose to have one done, then that is their choice, but we make sure they know they have options.

    :)

  • Completely fine to do. I'm a RN and have to have one every year. Although I haven't been pregnant up until now, many of my coworkers have been and received the TB test while pregnant without incident.

  • I did a 2 step Tb test. I had the 1st step before my BFP, and the second step after. There is a blood test called a quantiferon gold that some offices do which will show tb, however it's expensive so employers will not do this for you unless you already did a Tb test and chest xray usually.
