My almost 4 month old (the 20th) is still not sleeping through the night. We get one good stretch from about 7-11 or 12, but then it seems he wakes up every 2 hours after that to eat. We always try the pacifier first and sometimes can get another hour out of that, but most of the time he's actually hungry and just spits it out.
He goes down for naps and bedtime great- no fussing, just falls right asleep most nights. Takes about 3 naps a day, roughly 1 hour each.
I got the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" and it seems more focused on babies having a hard time GOING to sleep (but I've just glanced through it so far). So my question is (and we'll ask his ped at his 4 month appt also) can we start some kind of sleep training to get him to sleep through the night, or is this still "normal" waking to eat and just keep feeding him? He goes down great, it's just the sleeping for longer stretches we haven't gotten to yet. This is my first, so I'm not sure what's just normal behavior and what we can actually work on. Any advice? TIA!
Re: Still not sleeping through the night?
Is he strictly BF or FF?
We started introducing cereal about 3/3.5 months right before bed. It helped a lot! I know...studies say different, but I'm telling you....it really helped stretch his sleep during the night. We were up every 2-3 freaking hours. Now that he actually sleeps a bit better, he's so much more happier and playful during the day.
He slept through the night on his own once at 7 weeks, we started sleep training from there and never looked back. He's slept through the night all but 2 times since then, and those two times we just put the paci back in and everyone went back to sleep.
My pediatrician said that once they weigh 10lbs, they have enough fat stores to make it through the night. Go for it!
