Hi ladies! Im both nursing LO#2 and supplementing w/ formula. My supply has been low from the beginning and she had jaundice thus we had to supplement.
I;m trying to pump as often as possible to get my supply up...My question is.. is if I am nursing every 2.5-3 hours, when do I pump? Right after I nurse? Exactly half way b/w feedings? Does anyone have any schedule they "follow?" Any suggestions would be great. i'm only getting a measly 20ml per pumping so all the help would be wonderful!
TIA!
Re: BFing/Pumping Question
Its been a while since I've pumped but what I used to do was nurse DC on one breast (one breast per feeding was always enough for both my kids and they were both in the 90% for weight when I nursed them exclusively). I'd then pump right after DC nursed on the breast where DC did not nurse (does that make sense?) I'd then switch but use the same method the next time DC nursed.
For example: DS nurses on right breast, I'd pump the left breast (either at same time that DS nurses or right after) . Then the next time I nursed DS, I'd nurse on the left breast and pump on the right.
Although it was really tough to get used to at first, pumping at the same time that DS nursed allowed me to get more pumped - almost always filled a full Medela freezer bag and a bit of a 2nd bag (can't remember how many mls that was - but it would go all the way to the top).
At first I'd worry that all the nursing and pumping would make my body produce less, but in fact, I produced as much as needed - so long as I was nursing/pumping, body was producing.
When I was pumping I would pump both sides right after nursing.
Make sure you are drinking tons of water, eating oatmeal, and getting enough calories. Good luck
I was pumping right after each feeding.

How old is the baby? And how bad is the jaundice? Have you done a weigh and feed to see what baby is getting from you versus how much formula/bottled breastmilk you are giving?
DS got jaundice at 4 days old. My milk came in as they wheeled him to the nursery to go under the lights. I was advised to give him formula to supplement since he'd lost so much weight and the jaundice was getting worse every time they checked. He also wasn't passing any poop at that point. I would nurse, give him about 20 mls of formula, then go pump. An hour and a half later, I'd nurse and give my milk (about 10 mls) and then a bit of formula. I only gave formula three times I think, in super small doses, and focused instead on my milk. He was out from under the lights in about 12 hours.
We did a weigh and feed session at the KP newborn club a few days later and he was getting 2 full oz. per feeding (one oz per side) so I stopped formual. I was nursing him every two hours at that point and continued to do that for a long time.
If I were you, I'd try to nurse closer to every 2 hours rather than 2.5 or 3 and try to figure out how much baby is getting from those sessions before you work out an elaborate pump/formula schedule if possible.
Good luck!
