we have banned Caillou, can't stand him. He's whiney and sassy and drives me crazy. In fact at our house it's "broken" but some how it works at grandma's (I don't care if she watches it there, just not in front of me)

DH refuses to watch the Backyardigans. I can't stand Waybaloo or In the Night Garden.
But between Netflix and the PVR, DS rarely watches live TV. He has a few favourites (The Adventures of Chuck and Friends, Mighty Machines, Word World, Dinosaur Train) that we put on when he asks for them.
We don't allow DD to watch TV at all, so everything, I guess.
To be honest, I have a really big problem with all of the marketing and commercialism involved in children's television programming, so when she's old enough, I'm going to try and limit her to public television or things on DVD with no ads, like old Sesame Street episodes.
I read the book Buy Buy Baby years ago (after taking a series of workshops with Diane Levin, another author), and it scarred me for life.

She's not super into Barney but was for about a week, and honestly he didn't bother me that much.
No Yo Gabba Gabba here, I just don't see any real value to it, and it annoys me.
I don't like Dora either, because why does she have to yell so much? I feel like she's one of those people that think, hey, she doens't speak Spanish, maybe if I talk really really loud to Rox, she'll understand.
And Wonder Pets is so stupid, we don't watch it, really, you couldn't add a plot?
Pretty much we are all about Disney Junior, Bubble Guppies, and Between the Lions, and Team Umizoomi.
Ditto this. And I can't recall if I've ever seen a commercial on Disney Junior either. I'd love for DD to watch Sesame Street but it really never holds her attention. DH and I end up watching it and she wanders away.
It's not just the commercials - it's the marketing of the products that go with television shows. (Which is why I would prefer old Sesame Street - with NO ELMO!)
I know there's really no way to avoid it, but I'm going to try. It kind of comes from my work in child care and with child care providers. It makes me sad when all of the kids' play is based on a television show or a movie...and not that all children are like that or even that it's all bad, but...there's just something sad about to me. I think it has a lot to do with how much money it costs and how much companies like Disney, etc. make off that stuff.
When she was sick recently, I did let her watch some TV...we watched a NOVA documentary about the evolution of dogs. (Dogs are her favorite.) Any chance that's what she'll want to watch, instead of YGG?

I love that Anna has a crush on Brian. He is pretty awesome. I was a huge fan of his cameo on Sesame Street!
Since Will isn't home during the day (except on weekends, and we're not home much on the weekends, usually), he doesn't really watch TV. We record Sesame Street on our DVR and put it on sometimes when he's bored with us or not thrilled about waiting for dinner, but usually he just watches it for a few seconds here and there and then goes back to playing. So we don't have enough kid TV in our lives to need to ban anything.
Is Barney still even on? If it is- then that definalty. Otherwise- The Wiggles- I think they are SO ANNOYING! We are a Sesame Street and Elmo house only- that goodness that is all DD has any interest in.

My kids watch Sesame Street nearly each day after breakfast. After it, Sid the Science Kid comes on - and they've already lost interest...but for me, I can't stand that one - so they won't be watching him ever!
I watch either food network or the cooking channel sometimes during the day and they like to watch people cook and we'll talk about the vegetables, etc. Totally works for me!
Ha! I used to say that Barney would never enter my home; however, DD saw a clip once and fell in love, and (bad mommy alert!) I fell in love with the time I was given while she watches it. Now she watches it the morning after she takes her morning meds (she has to wait 30 minutes to eat, so this occupies her)
I don't plan on ever putting the Wiggles on for her though
It's bad enough we have to suffer through Barney (and we watch it On Demand so there are only 4 episodes at a given time)!

I actually think YGG has a lot of value! It has great songs, unlike most kid shows, and they are almost always sending an important message for young kids... I can't begin to count the number of times we've used songs from YGG to remind DS of something or to get him to do something... ("It's fun to wash your hands..." "Hold still..." "Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, either way it's okay..." etc.) We dance; we do "cool tricks." I think it's great.
To answer the question, I refuse to put on Barney or Dora. Phineas and Ferb is also a no-go, but it's not on DS's radar at all. He has seen Barney and Dora on occasion with other people.
As for the product marketing associated with shows, there are TONS that have virtually no products associated with them AT ALL. I really don't see this as a problem. Kipper is one of the sweetest kid shows ever, but it's British...I've never seen anything with Kipper on it. Lots of Sprout shows and PBS shows are that way, but of course there are notable exceptions like Thomas. I really think this is something you can control if it's that big of a deal to you. I personally don't mind it...If it's fun for DS, I don't see the problem. He's very smart, active, etc. So what if he wears Cars jammies and plays with Thomas trainsets?
We watch playhouse disney. (except Phineus and Ferb are banned completely.) There are no commercials and its all educational.
Anything on Nick Jr. (especially YGG and spongebob) is banned, but I do DVR UmiZoomi for the math.
Nick Jr does have commercials in between the shows because I always have to make sure the DVR cuts off right when the show ends. Otherwise I'll have to explain why we can't have pillow pets or zoo plates.
Totally laughing out loud about this!!! Max & Ruby are not banned in our house, but DH & I always wonder where the parents are as well.....ha ha.
Also, DS1 LOVES Handy Manny......but DH & I joke that Kelly must give "favors" to Manny since he has never paid her a dime for all of the supplies he buys from her.....ha ha.
ETA: Meant to say that Manny must give Kelly favors......oops!!
Dora has no place in our house. All the yelling and honestly she must be hard of hearing because she's constantly asking people to repeat something they already said but LOUDER this time. Yuck yuck yuck.
I would prefer no Thomas videos of any kind because the characters are just not nice. Gah. I hate that show and all the movies. DS has limited exposure to them and that's too much for me as it is. I don't mind the toys as much but hate that there are 4 different formats to buy and collect. Yuck.
I love Caillou. I didn't know other people hated him and sort of don't get it. He has two parents who are present and who actually parent him, even when Caillou himself acts like a jerk. Maybe I don't mind him because he reminds me a lot of my own 3 year old. I love that all the adults in his world are real and present unlike about 90% of the other kids shows on tv.
We also watch Dinosaur Train (yay for a family that learns and travels together), and Chugginton. DS has decided he is over Sesame Street, which makes us sad, but whatever. More room on the Tivo I guess.

she used to adore YGG (as do i) but not so much anymore
she loves the Backyardigans- but only through the theme song
mostly she watches movies. she is currently OBSESSED with charlotte's web & Monster's Inc.

I just googled "Kipper" and was brought to a Sprout page with a video. In the corner of the page was an ad for some kind of toothpaste.
Until DD is old enough to understand the concept of advertisements (research has shown this is close to age 8), then I want to keep her exposure to it to a minimum.
I love TV, don't get me wrong. I watch it all the time when DD is sleeping. But it makes me very uncomfortable that there is a billion dollar industry out there that wants to tell her exactly what to like when she's 13 months old. She's perfectly happy reading books, doing puzzles, and playing with blocks. TV will only take away from those things.

Ditto this. "It's Puzzle Time!!" I love Nick Jr. because of this. DD adores Zee. She's really into Blue's Clues and Yo Gabba Gabba. To the pp who didn't see the value in the weirdness of YGG - that's the biggest part of the value. I majored in education and I can tell you that so many times the things that stick with kids are the silly/weird things. It's a great teaching tool.
To answer the original question though, Barney, Dora and Diego are really annoying to me. That's not saying they're "banned" though. DD is hot and cold on Dora and Diego. If she wants to watch, then we let her watch.

Superned - while I agree with you to some extent on the marketing piece, disagree completely with the bolded part. Eliza is also perfectly happy reading books, doing puzzles, playing with blocks, playing outside & doing crafts and spends the vast majority of her day on these types of activities. She is not being harmed in anyway by her hour or so of TV, nor do I feel like ti takes away from her other educational/enriching activities. She has an advanced vocabulary of more than 45 words and phrases at 19mo old, she has 50+ signs, is active and engaged and inquisitive.
Like Reems, we either DVR or watch her limited shows onDemand so there is no commericals - ondemand has 1 at the beginning and one at the end - usually toothpaste or diapers which we fast fwd through, but I also don't see the harm in them. Yes, she has a barney doll, but that is about the only "marketed thing" she owns. We keep her toys gender neutral, educational and enriching whenever we can. She enjoys trucks and trains as much as her baby doll.
Sorry, I just can't get behind the TV is the devil rotting her brain argument. I fall firmly into the everything in moderation camp on this one, but to each their own.
I don't think TV is the devil. I watch all kinds of TV. I'm stating how I personally feel about my daughter watching TV and I don't mean for people to get defensive. Every family has to make their own choice as to what is best for them.
It matters to me that research has shown that TV is not good for very young children. That's why the AAP can out with their recommendation about no screen time for kids under 2. Maybe one hour a day isn't "hurting" children and I'm sure that many children who watch TV are quite smart, but I simply don't see a need for her to watch it.
And to be honest, I do think TV can rot children's brains. It has been linked to lower vocabulary, attention problems, behavior issues...maybe that won't be my kid, or your kid, but it has been shown - in peer-reviewed studies - to cause these issues in some children.
