Re: Diaper Genie/ Diaper Pail: Yay or Nay???

  • I have one in my nursery but seeing as this guy isn't here yet I have not used it Sad but once I do I'll let you know!
After almost 3 years and 2 IUIs our lil guy is here! Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker <a href="http://s579.photobucket.com/albums/ss238/hall_kyrac/?action=view

  • Before this weekend I would have voted NAY :) I figured why not use a regular trash? Well... I had my nephew this weekend and put his diapers in the kitchen trash. Forgetting I had done that this morning I put regular trash in there and when I lifted the lid thought our new Febreze scented trash bags didn't smell good at all, and in fact made the trash smell like a diaper pail! Fast forward to the shower where I then realized I had thrown his diaper in there (in a tied plastic bag) and at that point took back all the negative things I've ever said about the "specialized" diaper pails (or diaper genie) :) so... Now I vote YAY :)
  • We didn't get one until recently. Before we had one we just put stinky diapers in those powder smelling sassy bags and put it in the regular trash that goes out every night. About 2 months ago we got a diaper genie elite II and I really like it. It doesn't smell and it's super easy to change out the bag on the inside. The only thing that could be considered a downside is that it does not take a regular trash bag which I know is important to some people.

Either way it's personal preference. While I don't think it's a must have, it is pretty conveniant to have one in the nursery. HTH.

  • I agree that it is not a must have but it is convenient especially at the beginning. When they are up and you are changing them several times a night it is handy to have it in the nursery.  Plus you go through so many diapers in the newborn stage that you change the bag often so it doesn't smell.  We have a diaper genie elite.  I stopped using it when we started solids.  That poop stinks!  Now it just goes straight to the outside garbage.

  • I'm really glad we have one.  When they are little, they are great because they have so many dirty diapers.  It did pretty well masking the scent.  When DD got bigger and her dirty diapers got bigger, it doesn't seem to work as well to hide the smell.  We have to change it very often and the bags they require can get expensive.  But over all, I would say Yay.  We had the diaper genie elite II

  • HI! I have a Diaper Genie Plus or whatever it's called. It worked great for about 9mths and just in the last few months started to REALLY stink. I don't know if it's cause he is now eating mainly solid food and his poops really smell (so fun!!) but I go in his room and the pail stinks.

I think I am going to get just a basic Simple Human garbage pail and put it in his room. Not sure if that helps but that has been my experienc so far!

  • nay nay nay nay on Diaper Genie and Diaper Champ.

I had a Safety 1st pail which was like $10 that took regular trash bags.  Worked so much better than the Champ.  I hated that thing.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • I have to vote *yay*! We have the Diaper Genie Elite II and I really like it. I have a good friend who told us to not waste our money on it because it didn't work, but I couldn't disagree more. Turns out she never emptied her Diaper Genie, so the lid wouldn't close properly :(

We empty our DG every day and haven't had any "stinky" issues yet.

The one downside is that the liners go fast and are a bit pricey. Other than that, 2 thumbs up here :D

  • when i was a teen, i babysat for two different sets of twins. both families had diaper genies and i remember them working really well and simply.

also, i believe baby bargains recommends diaper genie. we registered for the diaper genie elite (my H said - anything that we would buy the very best of anything that is supposed to hold poop, lol!).

  • I have the DG elite 2 as well and we really like it.  DS is on a special dairy-free formula and his poo is awful and it does not make his room smell.  The liners are a little expensive but I order them through Amazon mom / subscribe and save and its not too bad (less then Target etc.).  We empty it every 3 days or so and I keep a dryer sheet on the bottom of the can which i think helps it stay "fresh" smelling.

Love the dryer sheet idea! I may have to try that, too!

  • We have the Munchkin Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail. Before we had V, I didn't really think having a diaper pail would be necessary. I just threw it on our registry on a whim, not really caring if anyone purchased it or not. Now I know that I absolutely could not live without that thing. It has a little canister in the lid that pours baking soda into the container every time you open and close it (genius!) and we've never had a problem with odor. It doesn't take regular garbage bags, but it is SO worth it IMO.

  • IME, the reviews depend on whether we're talking about the original DG, or the upgrade.

A whole lot of people told me (without my asking) NOT to get one, adding some pretty strong opinions  - BUT all of their kids are at least 10 years old now. In fact, I used the original DG when I diapered my now 13 yo twin nephews, and yeah, I agree - I was much less than impressed with the thing.

That said, the newer one has a much better reputation from what I hear. My friend whose DS is not quite 8 liked and recommended it, and it actually got great reviews from the Baby Bargains book. So I went ahead and registered for one.

  • We still use the DG II.  It's just now starting to stay stinky (on the inside).  I never smell anything when it is closed.  We will continue to use it for #2, I think I'm going to get an air freshener to put in the bottom.  I'm happy with it.

  • I vote nay. We have a regular covered trash can in the nursery for pee diapers. Poop diapers get thrown in the outside trash right away (in the scented diaper disposal bags). I haven't missed a diaper pail at all. Pee diapers don't smell, and even newborn poop diapers don't smell all that bad. The poop doesn't get stinky until solids are introduced, and at that point she only pooped once a day or every other day (so running them outside wasn't a huge hassel). If I had a super frequent pooper, maybe I would change my mind, but I don't think they are necessary.
