Question about swelling after a c-section

So, I had a c-section last friday the 15th.  I didn't have any swelling in my feet/ankles while in the hospital.  Tonight I noticed that my right ankle/foot is swollen.  My left ankle looks totally normal, it's just the right one that is swollen.

Is it a cause for concern that only one leg is swollen?  The info I have from the doctor when I was discharged regarding warning signs has a line about increased swelling and pain that is more in one leg than the other...but it's not painful...just swollen.

Plus, I was having trouble breathing when I laid down one night...freaked me out.  I called the OB on call at the hospital who said that the only thing to do was go to the ER.  We went to urgent care and had chest x-rays/etc and everything was fine, so I don't know if I'm just being a nervous nellie or what.

Is this something that you'd call the on-call person about or would you drink more water and wait until the morning to see how it looks?

Re: Question about swelling after a c-section

  • I had some swelling after mine.  The only time I noticed that one leg was more swollen than another when I was sitting on one leg or one leg was up and the other wasn't...

If it were me, I think I'd put my feet up and watch to see what happens.  As long as it's not painful or really, really swollen I think you're OK.

  • How was your blood pressure? The list from your doc sounds like pre-e symptoms which can develop postpartum. If that's what is is/was, your BP would be on the rise. I'd call today I think an ask for a check of your other vitals.
  • Thanks for the input!  When I went to Urgent Care on Thursday, my BP was in the normal range, but elevated for me.  My ankle is looking better (they are actually only getting a tad puffy at night, so I feel better about that).  The urgent care dr did call me yesterday to say that she's ordering more blood tests for me....she's now suspecting gallstones based on some results from thurs.

I think I am going to call my pcp tomorrow, though, to see if I can go in for a quick check.

    Thanks!
