March 2012 Moms

Does your husband go with you to every appointment?

My DH went with me to my first official appointment, but the baby was a little too small for us to see. My next appointment is on Tuesday, but he can't get off work. He feels bad, but there's nothing he can do about it...am I the only one who's mom will be with me when I (hopefully) see my baby for the first time?

  • He did with the first pregnancy.  This one he won't.  He'll come to all of the u/s appointments and maybe near the end or something but now we know that they are kinda boring for the most part ;-)

  • I haven't had any appointments, but he said he wants to come to all of them.

  • No, he won't. My first official appt is tomorrow, and he's coming to that. It is supposed to be just a Q&A with the nurse. He will probably also come to my 2nd appt, my first with my ob/gyn, where he can meet my dr. and hopefully by then we will get an u/s or hear the hb. Otherwise, he will probably come to the big u/s appts and maybe come toward the end. I've heard most of the appts are uneventful and our work schedules make it difficult for us to coordinate a convenient time for both of us to attend that many appts.

With the exception of blood draws, my husband has only missed one of my appointments while we were trying to get pregnant.  He'll probably go to all of the appointments now.  I think it helps him feel more involved.  Plus, he can ask whatever questions he wants to ask.

  • DHs work schedule allowed him to go to all of my appointments with DS1, but this time that won't work because of a doctor conflict. He'll just hit a few here and there to limit his time off work.  In the middle, thing got kinda boring for us anyway! We had a normal boring pregnancy.
  • Honestly, I don't need my DH there at every single appointment, they're not terribly exciting. I'm going to take him to the big ones, like the 20 weeks u/s or NT scan at 12 weeks. Besides, it's way easier for me to schedule appointments during the weekdays, when our daughter is in daycare (she's there twice a week and home with me the rest of the week). He didn't come to many of my appointments last time either, and I was quite ok with that.
  • my first appt is this friday and he's planning to go to that one.  we'll see about future appts.

  • For me personally I think it is unrealistic to expect the hubby to go to every appointment. The only apointment I think I wol ask him to make sure he takes the time off work for is the u/s where we find out the sex of the baby. But whats more important to me is that when hes home he is sensitive to my needs then.
  • That is tough.  Sometimes they can record it.  Even though it's not the same.  GL

  • My DH will go with me to all the appointments that he is able to since it's kind of tricky to leave work as a teacher and drive 45 minutes away for my appointments.  He will of course go to the 1st one and the anatomy scan.

  • With my 1st pregnancy, DH came to the 1st appointment and to the 20 week a/s. He would have liked to come to more appointments, but it was difficult for him to leave work and more important to both of us that he save up for time off after I had DS.

This go-around, he will be out of town for my 1st appointment (tomorrow!). I am bummed that he will miss it, but it was unavoidable as he is out-of-town for work for the better part of 8 weeks.

I think if DHs/DPs can go to appointments and want to go to appointments, that is great, but many of the regular appointments are pretty uneventful. It is totally okay with me that DH cannot be there most of the time, he is always very interested to hear how things went and I get a captive audience when I tell him all about it later!

  • My DH has never been with me to ANY OB appointment for the last 2 pregnancies, but he did come to the ultrasounds (separate in Canada).

  • My husband will be out of town for my first ultrasound (7 weeks 5 days).  The only other appointment I would care about him being there is the anatomy scan when we find out the sex of the baby, so I'll make sure to schedule that when he's here.
  • With my previous pregnancy DH went to the ones he could, but when he couldn't make it, I invited my mom. She really liked that. :] I plan on doing the same thing this time around.

  • My husband usually just goes with me on u/s. Thank goodness his job is flexible.

  • OP - I think it's great your mama can go with you! I've only been to one appt so far and my husband couldn't come, but he is uber pumped to go to the next one, because we may be able to hear the heartbeat!

Just let your mom baby you, she'll probably be so excited. And every time you want something from now on and don't want to get up tell your hubs he has to get it because he didn't make the appointment - HAHA!

  • Since my appts are weekly because I'm with and RE, I dont bring him to all of them.  He came to todays appt to see the babies and hear the heartbeat, but he probably wont come to another one until 12 weeks when we are released to the OB.
  • Mine has come to every appointment for both of our kids. and he's planning on going to everyone this time too.
