Babies: 3 - 6 Months

We shall swaddle forever

We use the Miracle Blanket, and have for about 2 months now. I tried loosening it tonight, and not pinning one arm down. It was still swaddled mind you. All was well for 2 hours, then she woke up crying. She had her arm out the bottom of the blanket, waist level, and was rubbing her face (which is always her issue when not swaddled). My weak self went in, swaddled her back normally, and she was out without me even picking her up.

My child is almsot 6 months old! I feel like it is crazy that she is still swaddled! Wondering if it will take a "ferber" session to get rid of it eventually, or if she will eventually do ok.

Prob would help if I wasn't so weak and didn't give in so quick...

Re: We shall swaddle forever

  • We use the Miracle Blanket too still. He's too tall for it so I've been folding the foot pouch up and just swaddling his arms. He has the exact same problem of rubbing his face and waking up. We have tried de-swaddling a few times with no success. We're going to do Ferber in a few weeks because he is growing out of his RNP but rolls over in his swaddle, gets stuck, and wakes up in his crib. I'm glad to know we're not the only ones swaddling an "old" baby!

  • We are trying the no-swaddling tonight and we are on hour 2 of soothing her over and over again...I'm getting nervous because twice she's gotten the miracle blanket around her neck over her face.  She's a freaking Houdini.

  • I dreaded de-swaddling.  We tried a few times and like you ladies I gave in and re-swaddled.  Then we tried again because he kept getting out of it and it would wind up over his face, he was pretty much OK with it.  It took two nights of soothing maybe two times throughout the night and now he's totally de-swaddled!  I thought it would be awful - but once we decided that it didn't matter how long it took or how much sleep we lost we were going to do it - it was almost painless.  Good luck.  I hope it works the same way for you.

  • Last night was our first one arm out. He usually sttn but got twice last night. We are easing him into it. He won't sleep more then 30 minutes on his back without the swaddle.

  • I know every baby is different, but my LO slept like normal for about 3 nights after I stopped swaddling her.  After that, she started waking up twice during the night again.  I let that continue for about 4 days and then swaddled her again.  I only swaddled her again for 2 days or so and then went without the swaddle again and she has STTN every night since.

  • I feel like we are in such an in-between place. I tried ditching the swaddle when he started rolling, that didn't work. But now he is breaking out of it and rolling and we get invites to the party in J's crib every night.

I brought him to bed at midnight instead of reswaddling, and he did the boob check all night long (not really nursing, but making sure it was there to have if he wanted it...)

Now after much fighting he is asleep in his crib, unswaddled, on his belly! (Or he was... got to get my crying boy...)

  • Try going straight from the swaddle to a sleep sack.  We tried the gradual change - one arm out, etc. - and it didn't work. We finally decided to go cold turkey to a sleep sack and it was as if we hadn't changed anything at all!
