Postpartum Depression

Depression meds=numbness

I have an appt to see my ob tues bc I am pretty sure I have ppd. If he prescribes me meds for the depression I am very afraid of just feeling numb. Unable to feel sad OR happy. Has anyone experienced this?

Re: Depression meds=numbness

  • Not PPD related but I've been on an antidepressant for almost three years now and I have never felt numb. I definitely can still feel both happy and sad but it's not the horrible overwhelming sad of the past. (Also not PPD related but my mom had the exact fear that you have.)

  • I feared this as well, and was pretty resistant to medication for that reason.  However, the medication has helped SO much.  And I wouldn't say I feel numb.  In fact, it's been much easier to embrace the joys.

If you're worried about it, talk to your doctor about starting on as low of a dose as possible and seeing if it will do the trick.

  • I have recently started taking Zoloft. I was in a very, very dark place. Not happy.at.all. Now I am starting to feel normal. Not drowning in deep sadness. I am able to enjoy my children and my husband.

I dont feel "medicated". It is not the "comfortably numb" feeling you get when you take a Xanax at all. I just feel afloat. I still have a ways to go, but this has made a significant improvement in my everyday life.

  • My therapist, who usually doesn't recommend meds as a first line approach for depression, told me that for ppd, meds definitely help. Hormones are just so crazy with ppd.

When I first went on Zoloft, I was feeling so rotten to start with that being numb would have been an improvement. For the first few weeks, I felt kind of fuzzy and what I described as flat. I wasn't really able to join in on conversations like I normally could and just wasn't myself. But, once my body adjusted to it, I started to feel much, much better and was a much better mother and wife because of it. I'm still dealing with depression, but it is so much better now and usually just brought on by certain triggers, as opposed to feeling like crap all the time.

If you're feeling depressed, the best thing you can do is to get help. There is so much you can do to feel better. I have also gotten so much out of seeing a therapist too.

Good luck to you and I hope you start feeling better soon.

  • Lurker here.  I've been on antidepressants for about 12 years for bipolar disorder and I have had that feeling before with certain medications.  The one that made me feel absolutely numb was zoloft, but I think that's just because it wasn't the right drug for me.  The drug that I have responded to the best was Wellbutrin.  It had some minor side effects that went away in a few weeks, but best of all, I didn't get that numb feeling I had while on other antidepressants.  Another plus is that it doesn't suppress your libido!  Just check with your doctor because I'm not sure if it is safe while pregnant/nursing.

When you go see your doctor, tell them you are concerned about the numb feeling and any other concerns you have, so they can find the right drug that works for you.  It might take a few tries for you and your doctor to find the right prescription, but once you find the right Rx you'll feel much better.  GL!
