DS refusing to breastfeed! Help!

So DS usually eats every 2-3 hours during the day and goes 5 hour stretches at night, usually eating 7-8 minutes each time (he has always been a fast nurser). However today he only ate 5-6 minutes this morning and at lunch time and then refused to eat this afternoon (he would start to eat and then just scream his head off). He went 6 hours before he would agree to eat, and only then would he take a bottle of expressed milk. We tried 3 times to breastfeed. I know it is not the taste of my milk because he drank freshly pumped milk. He usually only takes 4 oz in a bottle (which is a struggle to get him to finish), but he finished that and just screamed and ended up taking 2 more oz. He is 4 months old, and we have never had any breastfeeding problems before. I have considered teething, but when he is not trying to eat he is perfectly content. Any help, ideas, suggestions?

  • 1ht on iPad, sorry for format. Don't panic. How hot was it today? When it gets super hot here LO will not bf because he gets too hot from skin to skin contact. He wants a cold bottle (weirdo). Just give him a bottle now if that's what he wants, but keep trying. My LO only wanted one bottle, then he would nurse before bed and then the next morning. Weather definitely could play a big roll.

  • I thought I was alone. I've never had a problem BF before, but for about a 3 days my DS has been doing the same thing. I breaks my heart. I would love to know as well. Or what works for you. :o)  Hope things get better.

  • We've been having some similar issues for the past week or so. I think it is due to  DD not wanting to wait for my let down. She wants the fast flow to start as soon as she latches on, like it does on the bottle. She'll take 2-3 sucks, then fall off screaming and squirming. I can't relax and let down when she's crying like that, so it turns into a big mess. What is working for us - I try to let her BF normally. If it turns into meltdown mess, I have DH take her in the other room and keep her occupied. I sit on the couch and take deep breaths, close my eyes and think of DD and wait for my let down. When I feel it, I call for DH to bring DD back and she latches on immediately and starts nursing without any issues. It is a pain, but its working for now. I'm just nervous about the evenings when DH isn't around to help out.... :(

  • I would also like to point out, that around this time, babies go through another mental leap and this is many times accompanied by lowered appetite, refusal to eat and increased fussiness.  *Hugs*!  I hope it resolves itself quickly!

  • I like all the pp's suggestions. Did you switch soap or body wash? He may not like the taste of it. If it is because he wants a quick let down try pumping for a bit before you feed him.

M decreased his nursing after his shots and be careful, I ended up with a clogged duct.
