Two Under 2

Can I hold off on a double stroller for a bit?

Hi Everyone -

So #2 is due November 9.   I want to get a double stroller but was thinking of waiting for a few months after baby is born.

I love to go for walks around town with #1 but was thinking of using a baby carrier for those beginning  weeks and then it will be winter.  I don't see myself talking them both out too much those first few months.

Those of you with 2 already, what was your experience?  Was it a necessity in the beginning?

Thanks :)

FYI -   #1 will be 15 months when the baby is born

  • 17 months apart here.

I wore the baby and used the single for the first several months.

Then we used the double a hand full of times and realized it was a monster and a mess because #1 always wanted down to go run around.

Then we got the sit and stand and sold the double.

I highly recommend waiting until you're no longer wearing the baby.

It's nice to have your hands free and the baby on you if you need to take off running after the toddler.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

We bought a double and it's great for places like the mall but I've noticed when we're at places like the zoo it's not so great. DD likes to run and DS wants to be held.
  • For me it was a must even through I do love my slings. My boys are 15 months apart and DS2 was born hte first of October. I got a double b/c of the trips to the pediatricians office and everywhere else. Our pedi office you have to park in the parking deck then take an elevator down walk around to the building then antoher elevator up to the office. It's just easier with a double stroller. I still use the double stroller to the pedi office even through DS1 is 2yo. It's just easier to keep track of him and since he likes it I might as well use it.

  • Personally, I don't like wearing my kids so the double was a necessity for me.

  • It's too hot here in FL to wear DD2 right now and has been since she was born. The double was a MUST for me. I LOVE it too.

  • Mine are 25 months apart...we got a double stroller and returned it after our first use of it to a grocery store.  DS was in an "I'm independent stage" and wanted to walk every where, plus he didn't really fit well in the one we bought.  It was a cheap one from Meijer, cause I didn't think we'd need to use one too often.  In your situation where they are a lot closer in age, I would probably buy one before the baby is born.  At that age DS would run away a lot from me in public, with 2, I'd would want him safe.

  • I'm glad we had a double from day one. I had a c-section and couldn't comfortably babywear in the very beginning. We used the double right away when going to the pediatrician. We stayed at the shore for a long weekend when DD was only  2.5 weeks old. I was so happy to have the double for the boardwalk.

We still use our single. Sometimes they are both in the double- walks around the neighborhood, day trips, mall shopping. Sometime DD is in the single and DS walks. Sometimes DS is in the single and I wear DD. Sometimes one of them is in a shopping cart and the other is in the single.

  • You can definitely hold off, but I would get one eventually.

I had a great experience with wearing the baby and pushing DS in the single for the first 5 months. We did find uses for the double in the early months during the winter, but I would say the majority of the time I wore DD. That is, until summer hit. Babywearing in the warm weather SUCKS. When you have a 7 month old and a 22 month old, you will want a double stroller.

If you dont feel like you'd be using one a whole lot, get a used one off craigslist.

  • My kids are 17.5 months apart.  I bought mine when DD was about 3 weeks and wish I had it before she was born.  All it took was one crazy trip to the pediatrician for me to realize I needed a double.  Since then, I've been able to go everywhere with both kids.  I don't baby-wear and would be scared to any way having to handle my toddler too.

Honestly, I waited a little too long.  I realized we needed it when DS was about 8 months (DD 25m), and since we didn't have it all along, it seemed a waste to buy one and only use it for a year.  So we're getting by without it, but if I'd had it from Day 1, I would have gotten about 2-3 years of use out of it, which would have been worth it.

If you think you'll get one, I'd get it within the first few months.

  • We got one but I don't see us using it often.  We both work fulltime so the chance that one of us will be out with both babies alone is rare.  We've been out to the grocery together so we put DD#1 in the seat and I pushed the stroller with DD#2.  I'm sure we'll use it more when they are older and I venture out with them to the mall or theme parks.
  • Thanks everyone for your input! I am definitely getting one...  just need to decide when.

I don't have any experience yet, but we also plan on holding off on the double stroller for a bit.

  • I didn't use a double for the first six weeks or so.  You'll be fine to wait.

  • Depends on your situation. With me, DH is home 4 days a week. If we do happen to venture out, we plan on either taking 2 double strollers or one of us wear #2 and the other push #1 in her umbrella stroller. #1 is already pretty independent, so I don't see us using a stroller for her much longer. We are finding that she does alot better if shes able to walk and we put a harness on her (we don't pull her along on the floor like that one mom did that was all over the news). Totally depends on your situation. If I were a SAHM or had a DH that worked a different schedule, then maybe I would break down and buy a double.
