How accurate were your Ultrasound weights??

I had my biweekly ultrasound yesterday... and at 33weeks 1 day babies were 4lbs 11oz and 5lbs 3oz ... Which I think is HUGE for only 33 weeks.. Just wondering how close your scans were with the babies actual birth weight... Looks like I could have a couple 7 or 8lb-ers if I go close to term and they keep up their growth!

Re: How accurate were your Ultrasound weights??

  • Owen's estimate was 1lb 12 oz he weighed 2 lbs at birth.  Miles' estimate was 2lb 10oz and he weighed 2lb 8oz.  The u/s was done on the same day they were born.  Thank goodness little Owen weighed more than they thought he did!

  • I don't remember exactly, but I remember them being pretty accurate.

  • Mine ended up being a pound + off. My last u/s at 37 weeks estimated Nathan at 7.14 and Ryan at 7.8. I had them 6 days later and Nathan was 6.12 and Ryan was 6.1

  • Ours were off by just about a pound - they measured in at around 6 lbs and they came at 5lbs 3 and 5lbs even

  • At my last u/s 3 days before my DDs were born they each measured 6lb and they were born at 5lb 13 oz and 5lb 6oz.

  • I also had an u/s the day I delivered. They estimated Jack at 4lbs 3oz and Ian at 4lbs 1oz. Jack weighed 5lbs 0.5oz and Ian weighed 4lbs 10.5oz.

  • i had an ultrasound about 24 hours before my boys were born-- they estimated baby a at 5.5 lbs, and he was 5 lbs, 9 oz (so it was right on!).  they estimated baby b at 5 lbs, and he was 4 lbs, 7 oz, so that estimate was slightly off. they did say the estimates had a range of .5 lbs either way.

but yeah, those are big babies for 33 weeks!

  • Typically, the later the gestation, the less accurate the weights. That's why they always use the earliest ultrasounds for dating purposes.

  • Mine were off by about a pound for each of my guys. They thought there were going to be huge. Not so much.

  • My last U/S which was either the week of or the week before said that both babies were 5lb 5oz.  Jacob was 6lb and William was 5lb 5oz.
  • My last U/S was about 4 days before I had them and they both measured 6lbs 6oz. Cash was 6lbs 3oz and Jack was 4lb 13oz, so they were way off for Jack but he was also a very long baby so I think that's what threw it off.

  • My last growth scan was within a couple ounces of their birth weights.  I know it gets harder to measure the babies as they get bigger, I must have had a great tech!  I think even with the margin for error your babies are still good size for 33 weekers!

  • Mine were way off.

At 361d they measured 7 lbs 2 oz and 7 lbs 10 oz.

They were born a day later and weighed 5 lbs 14 oz and 6 lbs 3 oz.

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!

  • Mine were born about 1/2 pound less than what the last u/s indicated. That u/s was taken 1 week before they were born.

One was way off and one was pretty close.  At 35w 5d, DS was measured at 5 lbs 9 oz and DD was measured 5 lbs 11 oz.  They were born at 37w 1d and DS was 6lbs 5oz and DD was 4 lbs 15.5oz.  DD has really long legs and I'm thinking that the femur bone measurement is what threw the calculations on her scans.  She always measured bigger than DS.  Now there's a 4lb weight difference :)

I don't have any numbers myself - but my OB said that the earlier weights are much more accurate than later.  He basically said anything prioir to 30 weeks should be pretty accurate but past that, they can be pretty far off.  Esp with twins - he was having to "guess" on the body size of one of mine because the other baby's head was blocking his view.

  • Had my last growth scan u/s days before my induction and DDs measured at 6 lbs. 8 oz and 4 lbs. and some odd oz. It was off for both--baby A was just shy of 6 lbs. and baby B was exactly 6 lbs.

  • Yeah, I know the later in the pregnancy you are that the weights arent as accurate... but my guys have been measuring a big since we started bi-weekly scans at 20 weeks... at the 29 week mark they were already measuring  3lbs3oz and 3lb 6oz ... so it's leading me to think they are indeed just good sizes. But I suppose only time will tell ! My goal all along has been 36 weeks and at least 6lbs each so we'll see if I reach it!

  • my last u/s was just shy of 35 weeks and they were estimated to weigh 7.14 & 7.15...a week later they were born weighing 6.13 & 7.1...so they were off by about 1 pound...
  • It's been quite a while, but if I recall correctly my last weight estimates they estimated Tristan would be 6 lbs 12 or 13 ounces and Zxavier to be 6 lbs and a few ounces....I think, I remember thinking they were way off for Tristan and fairly close estimate for Zxavier.

Tristan was 6 lbs 4 ounces and Zxavier was 6 lbs 1 ounce.
