Types of Circumcision

I just found out that the hospital we will be delivering at they do Gomco and Plastibell circumcision. Does anyone know the differences between these or if one is better than the other for any reason? I have researched the differences in procedure but I'm not sure of reasons to choose one over the other.

Re: Types of Circumcision

  • Honestly, I don't think there's a huge difference.  They are two of the three most common methods and really, I'd just default to the doctor's preference.  Your OB/Gyn or pedi (whoever's doing the circ, I know it varies by area of the country) may be more comfortable with one over the other.

  • I read that it's cleaner with the Plasti-bell technique so that's what we went with for DS1.  What I mean by "cleaner" is the cut.  I have seen them done and have assisted with gomco and noticed that sometimes the edge where the doctor cuts seems to be jagged.  Also, you have to use more gauze and such afterwards with the gomco than with the plasti-bell.

  • I didn't know there was more then one way to do it.

  • With DS1 they used the Gomco.  He had a great outcome, but his was also done by a urologist (a family friend).  I would chose whatever procedure your doctor is most familiar and comfortable with.  Disadvantages:  Sometimes the Gomco leaves little "tags" of skin, usually unnoticable and if they are it can be fixed later.  If your doctor isn't as familiar with using the Gomco they can take too much skin, which is not as easily fixable (this happened to my friends baby).  With the plastibell you come home with a plastic bell attached & you have to wait until it falls off (6-12 days).  I am more familiar with the Gomco and like I said, it was an easy recovery for DS and I was glad to not have to deal with waiting for the bell to fall off.  We will do the same if this baby is a boy.  Feel free to ask any other questions...

  • If i get a choice I am going with Plastibell. My mother is a pediatric nurse and she has recommended this method to me. Its the only method her doctor will use. There isn't a cut made, and its easier to take care of, she said it requires no upkeep, you just wait for it to fall off.

  • Thanks, ladies! I'm still not sure which I'll choose but your input has helped!
