green poops- what does it really mean?

My son has been having green poops for almost 2 weeks now.  They usually have mucus in them and also seedy like normal breastfed babies.  He will normally have a couple of "normal" yellow seedy ones a day but the rest are green.  His bowel movements also increased per day since he started having green ones from around 4/day to 8/day.  He is eating well, gaining weight well, and no fever.  As for fussyness not sure if it's just his norm or not - I'm still trying to figure out his personality :)  I have spoken with a Lactation Consultant a couple of times, went to a breastfeeding group, talked to a nurse at the pedi office (who said it was all normal), and written a couple of post on the breastfeeding message board and I am getting all different answers: foremilk/hindmilk imbalance, milk protein allergy, virus, or that it's normal - I don't know what to think anymore!

I have been block feeding for the past week and have seen no difference so not so sure it is a hindmilk issue - do I need to try longer?  I've even considered just EPing so that I make sure I get the hindmilk out - does this work for anyone?  I'm also wondering if it is an allergy - what have your experience's been if it was a milk protein allergy?  I have noticed a rash on and off on his arms (no where else) but think it maybe just a heat rash.  He snorts once in awhile but I'm not sure if  it's congestion. (I've read these things are symptoms of an allergy).

I feel like I am going CRAZY with all of this and seriously considering quiting breastfeeding at times because of it but really don't want too!  Are his poops normal and I'm overreacting???  Thoughts appreciated!

FYI my son is 7 weeks old.

Re: green poops- what does it really mean?

  • I have heard it means the baby isn't getting the rich hindmilk, but am sure there are other reasons too.  DD's poo was always a bright orange when I was nursing her.  I am EPing for 4 days to heal and her poo is now green or yellow so I don't think EPing will solve the problem.  Sorry, I don't really have any advice.

  • If the pediatrician said it was normal (or their nurse) I think you are okay.

  • We are having the EXACT same situation! I mostly block feed already, so I trying hard to make sure she's finishing a breast now- although sometimes she seems to be done before the breast is empty, for me, which can be a sign of oversupply, which can lead to a fore/hind milk imbalance.

I also tried cutting out caffeine, because that was the only thing I ate at the same time every, and her greener poops were during her fussier period. Well, now she has greenish poops all day that are somewhat mucousy, like you said. I also can't tell if the fussing is normal for her or not! She also poops very frequently, 8 times sounds about right.

I'm starting to think that she's fine and I shouldn't worry about it. I am going to work harder to make sure she finishes one breast and get better about knowing which breast I'm on when she starts a feeding. If she gets other symptoms or her fussiness/discomfort increases, I'll take her to the doctor. Hopefully this is just what's normal for our LOs and there's nothing to be concerned about!

  • Oh, and do not give up on breast feeding! I also don't think you need to switch to EP-ing. Like I said, hopefully this is just our LOs' norm. You are doing a great job!
  • DD had the same thing- green mucousy poo. Her Pedi said it was probably normal as long as there was no blood, which would point to an allergy, but she said I could try to eliminate dairy to see if it helped. I've been off dairy for almost 2 weeks now and no change, so I think i'm bringing the ice cream back, LOL.

It's probably not an allergy if there's no blood but dairy does take 2 weeks to leave your system so you might have to give it a little longer to see results even if that is the problem.

  • I too was having that problem. I know it was from a bit of over supply and block feeding did the trick.
  • maybe extend the block to a longer time...
