We've tried Every Bottle Known To Man!

Currently, DH is at Babies R Us getting a Tommee Tippee and Avent slow-flow bottle to try. We have tried: Dr Browns (have a TON left-over from DS!), Medela (that came w/my manual pump), Breastflow, Born-Free, Drop-Ins, Nuk.. and I think that's it.

She USED to accept Born-Free - that was the one we had th ebest luck with. But lately - nada. Not even with DH and I'm not near them. She just turns her head away.. chews on the nipple.. acts totally uninterested. When I get her back, bc I don't want her to get hungry, she chows down.. like, audible sigh and all!

I want to get her used to a bottle. I want to be able to leave for more than a few hours, to regain some sanity! I have frozen milk stored.. I want to leeeeave! Any tips to get her liking a bottle better?

I wonder if having DH give her one during one of her thrice-nightly wakings would work? Or do you think she'd be too disoriented and just get ticked off??

  • Have you tried a cup?

  • Can you have someone other than your DH try? My DH just wasn't persistent enough. He would give up as soon as LO started playing around. I had my mom try it, and she had much better luck.

  • Hope it works out for you, that's a shame all the money spent!

  • Have you tried when she's hungry and/or when she's not particularly hungry? Sometimes it helps to change up what you're doing. Also, lots of people won't love this advice, but a faster-flow nipple might be worth a shot (especially if you have a fast letdown). GL! Something will work eventually, just keep at it.

  • Have you tried it when she's sleepy?  When she's wide awake?  Walking around?  Bouncing her?  With a "dirty" shirt of yours draped over the feeder so it smells like you?  In the exact same position that she bf's in?  In a different position?  In the swing?  In the bouncy chair?  Warmer?  Cooler?  When she's hungry?  When she's really hungry?  When she's not hungry?  Fresh milk vs. frozen milk?  (sometimes frozen milk has lipase in it)  Have you (not dh) tried it?  Someone other than dh?  When she's distracted by a toy?  Slipping it in while she's sucking on a pacifier?

My dd will take a bottle easier than ds did, but the only place ds would take it at first was in his swing, when he first woke up.  The first 2-3 days he only ate a few oz during the day when I was at work, but slowly worked up to taking it like a champ.  Good luck!

  • I agree with what pp have said above - you should stick with one bottle that she is used to.  Also you should leave the house when your DH is feeding her (or at least be on the opposite side of the house).  Have your DH try different places/positions, for a while M would only take a bottle if DH bounced on my yoga ball while feeding him.  Also if she refuses wait and let your DH try again in 5-10 mins.  She won't starve if her feeding is a little late.

  • I would just choose one bottle that you want to use and stick with it.  I agree with the suggestion of trying it at different times.  I had success right when my LO woke up from a nap and was still sleepy.  I would also try different temperatures.  This didn't seem to matter to my older two, but my youngest seems to prefer it on the warmer side.  Different positions could help, too.  Maybe your LO doesn't want to be held in the nursing position so you could try with her sitting up, sitting with her back to your DH.  Some babies prefer a latex nipple instead of a silicone so you could try that if you think it might work.
