Two Under 2

Did you plan for 2u2?

Hi ladies, I lurk here often but I had to come out of the shadows to ask a question...

Did you plan for 2u2?  My husband and I really want to have one more baby.  He seems ready but he works long hours at 2 jobs and isn't home a whole lot.  I am a little concerned about:

1. Being pregnant with a young toddler and 2. Having a breastfeeding newborn with a young toddler as well.

Can you offer any words of wisdom or encouragement?  I just stopped BC and we are using protection for a couple of months to get the BC out of my system before we actively start trying.

Thanks so much!

Re: Did you plan for 2u2?

  • Yes, we planned for 2u2 before my first was even conceived. It made sense to us both financially and what we wanted for our family long-term.

Your results with 2u2 will vary. I've heard stories all across the board from being ridiculously difficult to manageable and everything in between. If you do want to do it, I'd say go for it. That age gap would only be more challenging than any other sibling gap in those first few years, and sadly the time goes by far too quickly. :(

  • Yes, we planned 2u2, both times. Being pregnat with a young toddler actually wasn't bad because DD was still taking 2 naps a day so I could get stuff done during one nap and take a nap myself during the other. It hasn't been as easy this time around as DD and DS both only take one nap and the rarely overlap.

I can't offer any advice on the breastfeeding, but I'm sure someone on here can provide some insight.

  • We did plan for 2u2. We planned to start trying for #2 after #1 turned 1 but we were blessed with a surprise BFP a couple months early and couldn't be happier! Since I am still pregnant with #2 I do not have any advice to offer but would like to wish you luck with reaching the correct decision for your family.

  • Yes, we planned 2u2.

    1) I was capable of more than I thought I would be while pregnant with a toddler. It helped that he learned how to walk before I got into my third trimester.

    2) Breastfeeding has been easier the second time around. I've come across the same hang ups as I did the first time around, but this time I know what to do and I'm not stressed about it. I can nurse walking around or sitting on the floor.

Yes it was planned and we're thinking about it again with #2 and #3. Currently DD is 23 months and DS is 4 months (19 months apart). The pregnancy was more challenging. I was MUCH sicker with DS so that was tough, I napped every chance DD napped.

As for BF, My supply tanked when I was pregnant with DS and DD was still nursing. It sucked because I think she would have nursed longer but we made it 13 months so it was all good timing in the end. At first I was sad about it ending though. Nursing DS is more of an on the go thing, I nurse him while chasing DD or playing with her. He doesn't get 100% of my attention when he's nursing like she did. The night nursings are tough because I'm so tired and he's up often to eat. It's all worth it though and I would do it again in an instant!!

  • We planned for it and it happened the first month....LOL. Being pregnant with a toddler really hasn't been that bad. Some days I have to lay on the floor while he plays around me but I'm still actively engaged with what he's doing. Or when we're outside and he's playing in the kiddie pool I can relax and dip my feet in! It hasn't been near as difficult as I thought it would be. DD isn't hear yet so I can't speak about the other things. In the next few months DH will also be working very long hours and won't be home much. I have no idea how I'm going to do it, we'll see!

2u2 wasn't planned, but it worked out so well, we planned 3u4.

I was slightly terrified of 2u2, not really 2u2 but just 2 in general. Even though we always knew we'd have more not having had the chance to decide when made me scared of what I was being thrown into. I do know God knows what He's doing though.

Set your expectations low. Things will get done, everyone will survive. This time will pass. Know that the troubles will be short lived in the long run and enjoy the good moments.

  • yes, we planned for 2 under 2.  tried when DS turned 10 months and got pregnant the first month of trying.

i am lucky to have a 1 year maternity leave since i'm in Canada, and we have to pay to keep DS's spot in daycare so we'll still have the option of sending him to daycare 5 days a week on the weeks that we need to.  we also waited 18 months to get in this daycare, and they offer a healthy subsidy for having 2+ kids in there so in a sense we were planning for LO#2 when I was just pregnant with DS by getting on the waiting list and doing everything we could to get a spot in this daycare.

1st trimester was hard when i was super tired but DS still took 2 naps a day so i rested a lot.  i went back to work full time in my 2nd trimester and our house is a bit of a mess and we eat a bit more convenience foods than i'd prefer, but overall it hasn't been too bad being pregnant with a toddler.

Yes, we planned for it. It's not easy going through the nausea and exhaustion with a toddler, an I'm sure it will be challenging having 2u2, but I think in the long run it'll be best for us.

  • We planned 2u2 due to my age.  When you're old, you don't have much choice if you want more than one child....lol.

Being pregnant with a toddler was tough.  I'm not going to lie.  And of the 8-10 other moms in my mom group who also have 2u2, they will all say that it was tough.  So, be prepared.  It's doable, but tiring.  Esp. because I was pregnant in the summer.  Ugh.

Once the baby was here, it wasn't as hard as I had expected.  I have hard days, but most days are my new normal, so we don't notice a difference.  GL to you!

  • Thanks for all the encouragement ladies!  I don't know why I am so worried?  I guess it's just a big change?  You ladies are all wonderful and I can't wait to be able to join you!

    Thanks again!

  • I have no idea what we're getting ourselves into, but we did plan for 2 under 2. In fact, if all goes well with this pregnancy, it will be closer to 2 under 1, as they will be only 15-16 months apart!

This is very true. It totally depends. You could have a very easy going toddler but a super fussy baby or vice versa. I was lucky enough to have a high needs toddler AND baby. :)
