how old before LO can understand phone and skype?

how old does my LO need to be before he can UNDERSTAND phone or skyping--not just recognize my voice/face, but get the concept of a device that lets you see or hear mommy when she's at another place?

i went away from DS for 4.5 days with this conference and decided not to do phone or skype, hoping it would be out of sight, out of mind. i knew that at this age, phone and skype would definitely be confusing for him. at what age do you think they can understand these things (and maybe take comfort in them)?

  • My 3.5 year old Skypes with her grandparents every weekend. She always asks if they can go to the park with us.  They are in Iowa, we are in Hawaii. So I don't think she understands it yet.

My 21 month old has no clue.  She just waves and says grandma and grandpa.

  • When my boys are on the phone with my mom they understand that she is at her house BUT her house is only a mile.  They can tell me how to drive there.  They ask Nana to come over but understand when she says she has to be home.

  • Not 7 months... as I'm trying to convince my mother, who went back to florida and is insisting I skype with her so the baby can see her.

I'm refusing. I promised pictures and video so SHE can see the baby, but I'm not skyping her with my 7 month old so the baby can see her. I told her the baby will just see the moving colorful picture and get really confused that she can hear Nana and not see her.

  • We Skype w/ my parents and she tries to touch them. She gets very excited seeing them on the screen and can't understand where they are but is happy to see them.

As for the phone she picks up our cells and will say "hi" when playing but if someone talks back she's shocked. She understands you talk to phones but not that someone can talk back.

  • We started skyping really young, but it was so my parents could see her - we pointed the external camera towards her and she didn't look at the screen.  They got to see her roll over, crawl, play with gifts, etc.  Probably around 14 months, she started tracking faces and saying "hi" on the phone, but there's no conversation.  She does like to carry the phone around and say "hi" over and over to my mom now.  :)

  • We Skype with my parents, but more so they can see LO. She likes looking at faces and hearing voices, so it can be fun even for a little baby.

  • Around 9 months, Maya would start picking up phones and putting them to her ear,  but it wasn't until about 10 months that she would pick it up and say HI or HI DAD (we call DH at work a lot to "talk". When she hears his voice on the phone, she gets very excited and shouts DADA. She will lean in and say HI when the other person says hi, so I think she gets that someone she knows is on the phone talking to her. Haven't done video skype yet so I am not sure about that.

  • I think grandparents are one thing but mommy is another. When I was out east, we tried phone calls and skype. Katen (3) was fine. Ana (18mos) was absolutely not. It was so hard on her that she cried for 45 minutes after I signed off. It probably just depends on the kid.
