Another Q re: Newborn photos - when to take them?

I just bought a Facebook Deal last night for a 1 hr photography shoot that we want to use for newborn photos.  When is the best time to get them done - meaning, how old was your baby when you did yours?  I know when they are still really little they are all mold-able for some cute poses...but what if they are still a little splotchy/peely/cone-head-ish from birth, would it be better to wait a couple weeks?

Re: Another Q re: Newborn photos - when to take them?

  • I vote for 3+ weeks after birth, for a couple of reasons.

First, and no offense intended to ANYONE who loves these, but personally, I find some of the posed "sleeping newborn" pictures creepy.  To me, they kind of look like the baby is dead.  So I actually preferred pictures of DS awake, and they just aren't that consistently alert for at least the first few weeks.  Some of the posed pictures are adorable, and DS did fall asleep at one point so we were able to take a few, but I was glad that in most of his newborn pics, he had his eyes open.

Second, I agree with you that brand new babies aren't always that cute.  DS was born sunny-side up, so he had a serious cone head and bruises all over his face from passing through my pelvis the wrong way.  He also didn't have ANY eyebrows or eyelashes for the first three weeks (!).  Even now, I look at pictures of him during the first 3 weeks of his life, and he's almost unrecognizable.

    Just my 2 cents :).

  • My photographer prefers to do them within 2 weeks so they are still pliable and sleepy.

  • My photographer likes to do them sometime in the first 10 days.  We did ours at 7 days old.

  • My photographer likes to do them in the first 5-7 days, but he does the sleeping photos, so if you want photos with an awake, alert baby, definitely wait longer. I'm really happy with the sleepy photos we got, but I can understand why many people prefer to get awake photos.

  • we did ours at 10 days.  DS was alert for most of the pics actually and we only took afew of him while sleeping.  Our session lasted ~3 hrs though so depending on photographer, you may only get a few poses in.
