How do you tell how much lo drank since it gets all squished and sucked in. I tried opening the top to let air back in but I ended up spilling bm all over. Help.

If you let it sit, eventually the milk will settle in the bottom and you can see how much was drank.

This is no help to you since it's what you do already, but I just twist the lid open enough to let some air back in the liner and haven't had any problems with that.
