I was at my doctor's the other day and she pulled up my first ultrasound report and said, "Hmmm.. I guess they want to do a follow-up ultrasound on you because they found something on baby."
I said, "Huh?"
She replied, "They found a couple of cysts in baby's brain. They sometimes go away. I don't know much about it."
That was IT. She pretty much smiled and then said good-bye to me after quickly scribbling her signature on a diagnostic request sheet. I freaked out the whole way home, crying and thinking of a million different things (cancer, toxoplasmosis, downs syndrome, etc). My mum was crying too. We both Googled it and we've come up with Choroid Plexus Cysts. Anyone else have any experience with these? Apparently they just go away (I'm 22wks along, it says they vanish by the 3rd trimester).
I'm going to be so worried until I see my obstetrician soon, I'm not sure what she can tell me but they say if these cysts accompany any other abnormalities in baby it can be a sign of Trisomy 18 and all that, this is my first pregnancy and I'm just...yeah.
Re: Choroid Plexus Cyst
We thought DD had one, at my 37 week appointment. Scary as hell, I was ready to give birth any day and the tech tells us to go do research. In our case, it ended up just being a blip on the screen. However, from what my doctor said, it's becoming more common as technology advances. She also said that her child was born with one, and was prefectly normal.
I will tell you, there have been a couple posts about this lately on 2nd tri, so I would look a few pages back and see what some of the other mother said.
Best of luck.
One of my twins had bilateral choroid plexus cysts at 14 weeks. By 20 weeks they were gone. I was originally very worried about it, but the doctor who did the 20 week scan (and from then on all my monthly scans until the girls were born -- he was a multiples specialist) told me that he sees them all the time and says that even when they occasionally do not go away (apparently some people have them all their lives) they do not cause problems. A big relief. Today both my girls are happy, healthy, almost 6 year-olds.
I know it's hard not to worry, but ditto what the PP said. These cysts are becoming more and more visible because of advances in tech. They usually are insignificant.
Please don't worry. They found one on my baby's brain too. They scheduled a follow up appointment a week later and it was gone.
At the appt we met with a genetic counsleor and she explained to us that they are completely normal and everyone has that in their brains at some point in their lives. The problem lies that they don't see them prenatally as often as they would be seen post natal. With that said they are found in 1/50 babies which is a lot of babies. I agree with PP that everything is becoming so advanced that they pick up on every little thing now. The genetic counsleor said that our parents didn't have this technology and it's very likely that one of us had one of these cysts.
The woman that I babysit for actually told me that they found the same thing on her sons brain when she was pregnant with him. This reall reassured me that it really is common and nothing to worry about. There is nothing wrong with her son and never has had anything wrong with him. She said they did an ultrasound two weeks later and it had gotten smaller. In my case a week later it was gone.
So please don't worry.
