Experiences with high fevers ?

Lauren has a had a 104 degree fever (or in the range) since yesterday. Her temp actually went up, a couple of tenths of a degree, a hour after I gave her motrin (up to 103.5). She seems kinda wiped out but did ask me to call her friend so they could play outside tomorrow. She is barely eating or drinking. Has anyone been through this?

I did take her to the pedi today and the only thing they noticed was that her throat looked a little red (strep test was negative). I guess I am just looking for reassurance. She has never had a fever this high before and it completely freaks me out. Clearly, this had to happen the day DH returns to work after being off for several weeks and he won't be back til Sunday. Gah!

Poor girl has already not had a great week, as we found out that she is going to need to speech and occupational therapy. I just want my little girl to get better.

Re: Experiences with high fevers ?

  • Both my boys have had fevers that high and both times it was due to ear infections.  I would just watch Lauren through the night and give her Tylenol / Motrin and if it gets really high, try cool her down with some cool wash clothes.  I understand how scary this is.  My dh is gone a lot, too (right now, actually) and I'm always scared that one of the boys will get sick while he's away.  I hope Lauren feels better soon.

  • We've had maybe one or two like this with Colton and it was from teething.  You can switch off Motrin and Tylenol and give more often (maybe call nurse line to ask in what order).  I would also put a cool wash cloth on his head for like 15 minutes every hour through the night.

Fevers are always worse at the end of the day when the body is tired.

    Good luck!

  • Gavin had a high fever like this a few weeks ago and same thing, all they could find was a sore throat- but strep was negative.  It did go away on its own after a few days but it was pretty miserable in the meantime.  Luckily, Sophie didn't get it.  Hope it clears quickly- sorry to hear about the ST and OT... I hope that goes quickly as well.

  • We just went through this a few weeks ago. Owen had a fever that went up to 105.3. That had me a little concerned but not overly worried. He hasn't had that many fevers so I called the pedi again. We had just been in earlier that day and same thing throat was a little red, no other symptoms, negative strep....just a virus. Anyway, they said that after age 2, they pay more attention to how the child is acting rather than the temperature. As long as they are not very lethargic and are still drinking some to not get dehyradrated, not to worry. Owen's fever stayed for about 4 days and would go back and forth between 101-105. I was told to alternate tyelnol and motrin every 3 hours until his fever stayed down and just try to keep him drinking. When the fever was at the highest he was a little pitiful, didn't want to play much just sit in my lap and watch tv, but when it went down he was playing and laughing like usual. That's why I never go too worried. Anyway, his fever went from being back up to 103 at bedtime on Saturday night and then Sunday it was gone. I kept checking him all day to make asure and it never cam e back. It was really weird. I hope Lauren recovers quickly. Just keep an eye on her and let her eat/drink whatever she feels like to keep some energy up. Owen was living on Cheez its. I don't know why but that's what he wants whenever he is sick.

  • Don't know what it could be, but I wanted to pass along this info my pedi gave me about fevers at our checkup last week.  She said that fevers are actually a good thing, and there really isn't such a thing as too high of a fever.  That the body will not make a fever so high that it will do damage to itself any more than you could suffocate by holding your breath.  She said that you shouldn't give meds for a fever alone, only if they are acting like they are in pain. She also said she would MUCH rather see a child that is active & alert with a fever of 105 than a child that is totally listless with a fever of 101.

I thought that was all very interesting.  =)
