Re: Awesome blog post about breastfeeding
Good article. Thanks for the link.
I hear what she is saying, but at the end of the day, I think the bottom line is do what is comfortable for you. Period. I'm "pro-choice" when it comes to BF'ing. It's each woman's choice if she wants to or doesn't want to BF...NO ONE ELSES! BF covered up, hidden away in a car in the very far space of a parking lot, or locked in a bedroom...it's up to each woman to decide for herself.
Even though I BF LO1 until she was a year, my comfort level never went up to public. I had no problem excusing myself from where ever I might have been to go feed LO or I would plan ahead and take a bottle. I think it's great for women who are confident enough to do it anywhere, but I was never that woman. I was just grateful I was able to BF because I know there are a lot of mothers who want to, but just are not able to.
I agree that every woman should choose what is most appropriate for her & her baby. If you are able to nurse your baby discreetly in public (or not, and you just don't care) then good for you.
For me, I nursed DS in public all of the time, but I always used a nursing cover. I was a 40F and my breasts were larger than my son's head-- there was no way to nurse him discreetly. It bordered on indecent exposure. My SIL (who is an A cup) can easily nurse her baby without anyone noticing. For me, the cleavage was out of control, and I felt like exposing myself in that way in public was not appropriate (no matter what the reason). My son always got fed when he needed to and I never felt bothered by slipping the nursing cover over my head.
I think she agrees that everyone should have the right to choose (doesn't she even say that?). She's just saying that those that do nurse out in the open are doing a sort of service and shouldn't be made to feel ashamed.
I've never nursed completely out in the open except in groups that were entirely women
