My Son's Choking Story

A lot of you are friends with me on FB so you know most of the story, but for those who don't or who want the whole story, I've posted it to my blog.  It's a long one.  Long story short, we are allright now.  :)

Re: My Son's Choking Story

  • Thank you for sharing! I was very curious about the actual choking incident. I didnt want to ask when I saw you though! Very scary. I've definitely been more paranoid and cutting W's food smaller since this happened... I'm so glad he is recovered!

  • Oh lord, that sounds horrible. I'm so sorry you had to go through that, thank god DH walked in when he did, sounds like he saved the day. I think kids can inhale anything unfortunately. I'm glad he is back to normal. As for the rash, it's probably yeast, did you have the dr look at it? I would put Clotrimazole (lotrimin)  and Triple paste with every diaper change, wash the wipes (they sting when you have a rash and make it worse) and give probiotics, (culturelle, one capsule opened in a cup/ bottle of milk daily). I also talk to Dh a lot about not giving her nuts yet! I am going to forward this story to him. Thanks for sharing.

  • Amy reminded me of the priobiotics.  Did your doctor recommend that?  When Carter was on antibiotics post-hospital, he was also on Florastor (sp?) that is an over the counter probiotic.  You mix the little powder packet with juice and they drink it 2x a day with breakfast and dinner to keep diarrhea under control.

I'm so sorry you had to go through all this!  And 35 weeks PG no less!  I guess that's better than going through it with a newborn.  Hopefully, this will be a distant memory soon.  People ask me all the time how Carter is doing, and I always have to stop for a second to figure out what the heck they're talking about because he's doing so well, I forget that he had a recent hospital stay.

  • Wow, I had no idea of all that doctor's do for choking! I assumed getting things out would be pretty simple, and out of the hospital in an hour. What a scary experience! So glad your husband was there. Thanks for sharing, and bringing awareness.

  • He didn't just choke, he aspirated, meaning he breathed the strawberry into his lung. If you choke on a piece of food and it just gets stuck in your throat and pops right out, you can still have some swelling of your upper airway/larynx which is concerning but he got the food all the way down in his lung airways/ bronchi. Poor baby.

I think we were all wondering how such a thing happens so we can try to prevent it from happening to someone else.

  • Ditto KM! I have been thinking of you all. After reading your blog I bawled my eyes out. So happy E is better. What a scary thing. My kids choke on water and my family thinks I am crazy for doing the death stare every time I hear them choke.....you just never know how serious something can turn in to. Again, I am so happy he is better. ~Hugs~
