Buying diapers ahead of time?

I really want to start buying diapers now, but I'm afraid that I'll buy a kind that don't work for my baby!

Have any of you ladies started buying diapers yet? Any suggestions from the second and third-time moms out there?

Re: Buying diapers ahead of time?

  • I recommend the Walgreens brand. They are really good and usually they have them on sale and with a coupon you can end up getting them for around $4 a pack. I would def. stock up when you find some on sale, you can save your receipt and always take back unopened packs.

  • I really wanted to buy diapers ahead of time but a couple friends of mine told me it is one of those things that you really need to wait until LO is here.  There is such a difference in sizing, fit, etc.   Plus you will most likely get some as shower gifts and from the hospital to tide you over until you get to the store.

Here is what they told me to do, which is what I did, and i am passing it on to you.

Open up a gift card to target or walmart or whereever you think you will be doing the majority of your shopping.  Every week put 20 on that gift card.   A case of diapers is usually around 20-30, so put on the card what you would be spending on the diapers.  Then when LO actually comes you will have a nice amount on the gfit card you can devote towards diapers, plus you will be used to spending that amount every week so it wont be such a shock to the pocketbook.

i was concerned about, oh my gosh I am never going to get to target so how am I going to by diapers.  I promise you, you will.  By the time LO was a week old I had been to target 2 times and BRU once. It just happens.

I think LO went through 3-4 different diaper types before we finally found one we liked and he grew out of sizes at a different rate then the box said because he was long and skinny.  for the next baby I will do the gift card idea again.

  • We liked Pampers Swaddlers for when our little guy was, well, little! Now we use Sam's Club (Members Mark) which are just as soft as pampers and huggies and fit well.

  • I just remembered a friend of mine signed up for diaper delivery on amazon.com/mom or diapers.com also delivers i believe.

  • For DD#1, we were Pampers all the way; don't really know why. I guess that was what we started with.

We have been using Costco diapers since DS#2 (so 2006) and we love them!  The best part about them:  Costco will take back any unopened boxes if you need to exchange them due to the baby growing so we could buy ahead.

Since DD#2 just outgrew size 4, I have 1/2 a box of those left for this baby but I took the extra box back to Costco and got size 5.

With DD I bought a huge box of newborn diapers, DD came out weighing 9 lbs 1 oz., and she basically didn't fit into them. DS came out 9 lb 5 oz and still never got to use the dang newborn diapers. :-)

  • i have used both huggies and pampers, as well as "off" brand.  prefer the pampers, i found the huggies would leak unless you point the tabs downward.  plus the huggies have a dye in them that smells really bad when combined with urine (P&N has no dye)  if you choose to stock up, check out babycheapskate.com and they have a handy chart about how many of each size you might need- so you don't overbuy.  size 3 is where your LO will spend the most time.  i've also never had a problem return unopened packs to brick and mortar stores.  i find one of the best deals is amazon.com, and i trade in my swag bucks for amazon gift cards, rendering the diapers virtually free.

That's what I was gonna say - DS was 8lbs 6oz and only wore NB size for a week - don't buy too many of the little sizes. He only wore one big box of 1s, one big box of 2s and only a couple of 3s (though once he got into 4s he stayed there for a while and got taller instead of just fatter) - he grew really fast & I still have lots of leftovers I've been saving for this LO.
  • Instead of putting 20 a week on a gift card that.could be lost or stolen why.don't you open an interest baring account. Better to make a little interest over 9 months than loan your money to a store.
