Tell me about Mirena

What are is your experience with Mirena? I'm going to get it after I stop BF in a couple months. I DO NOT want to take the pill anymore & we don't want to TTC for another 2-3 years. I've heard there is cramping the first couple of days. What do you think????

Re: Tell me about Mirena

  • I had some cramping the first day but then I was fine. I loved not getting a period from it. I only had it in for a little bit (TTC sooner than we thought) but I will probably get it again when it's time. Just be sure your Dr. shows you how to check the strings. Mine didn't say anything about it so I was always freaked out that it was implanting into my uterine wall (but I'm a hypochondriac).

  • I have had it since Dec and I love it. Yes there can be cramping during the procedure and in the first few days, but it was no where near what my typical period cramps were. I had really rough periods and not having one or only spotting a few days every few months is great! Just a tip, go shortly after your period near ovulation so your cervix is soft and open, it won't be as painful. Also some drs won't do the procedure unless you had a vaginal birth.
  • i had a tiny bit of cramping the first day, that was it

    i love it

  • I got it a few weeks after DS was born.  I had break-through bleeding for a few weeks, but nothing major.  I didn't even feel it when they put it in, just cramped a bit that day.  I think it's great.

... I EBF, it's estrogen free so you don't have to wait until you stop BFing.

  • The only complaint I have is the breakthrough bleeding. I have A LOT of it. It should subside after 1 year of having it.

I love not thinking about birth control though.

  • I have it and love it.  Getting it inserted was easy (I thought it would hurt but it did not)... and I had 2 c sections!  I had to get mine done while I had AF, which was gross, but other than that I am really happy with it
  • Wow, I had a completely different experience than others.  I had it put in 5mos post-partum.  I still hadn't had a period yet-I was EBFing.  Insertion hurt way worse than any menstrual cramps...my thighs ached it hurt so bad...that pain only lasted about 2 hours-but I was crampy for two days afterwards.  I had breakthrough bleeding everyday for almost 3 months....
