Dylan's birthday is end of July (ticker wrong).
Every year we throw a kiddie pool in the back yard, a slip and slide, a few sprinkler toys and a hefty supply of water balloons for the big water balloon fight at the end of the party (that lasts maybe 5 minutes).
The kids always love it.
This year? I'm thinking that at age 5 it's just not enough.
Am I over thinking this?
I REALLY want to rent one of those giant inflatable water slides (or even buy one because we'll use it for several years) but DH is balking.
Your thoughts?
At 5 do they need more than a slip and slide and sprinkler toys?
What else could we do that I'm not thinking of?
I've found a deal for a face painter for 2 hours but I don't think the boys will think it's all that cool.
Advice?

If it rains... we're screwed.
Seriously.
He'll be crushed.
I'm aiming for earlier in the day because it always rains in the afternoon, right?
RIGHT?!?!?!?!
If the forecast is for rain I may end up scrambling to see if Monkey Business can take us last minute.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.
Planning earlier is a good move. Your chance of rain earlier in the day is pretty slim. We rarely get a day where it rains all day. So try to relax on that--you are likely good, especially if it's before 2. If you had said you were having it at 4, then I'd question it.
Honestly, I think it's fine. I don't have older kids, but we just hosted a 4th of July party with kids ranging in age from 2-8 and they all had a blast just running around in the kiddie pool/sprinkler. I didn't even have squirt toys or water balloons. The older boys seemed perfectly content with that. At 5, I think what you described sounds fun. In my limited experience, boys are happy just running around and being goofy.
If you really want something else, how about someone who makes balloon animals? We went to an 8th bday recently and all of the boys LOVED it. The guy made these swords and other animals (my DS got a flamingo) and that was entertaining. I can get you the info if you want. My friend supposedly got a great deal on him.
We bought one of those big slides and didn't have much luck with it. I was always afraid that kids were going to fall off and break something. We had it 2 months and ants made a home in it and ate a ton of holes in it.
Kids make their own fun and IMO what you have sounds great.

i would probably buy one of those slides vs. renting one - they have come down in price a LOT - a few of my friends own them now - and they are great.
one friend's oldest child is 7, the next is 5, and at her last party they just had the water slide/pool out + their regular yard toys- and kids were playing for hours. No need for more structured games if you have a blow up slide type thing.
i hate face painting- esp if there is a water thing going on - it will just melt/wash off of them.
