Trying to Get Pregnant

How is your garden doing?

I remember a few weeks ago someone posted about gardening while TTC and lots of ladies had mentioned that they garden while TTC.  I was just wondering how your gardens are going?  So far we have picked a bunch of zucchini, lots of cukes, some green peppers and a handful of sugar snap peas. Our tomatoes should be ripening any day now and we will make and can sauce and salsa.  Acorn squash are looking great.  So are the yellow peppers.  Green beans any day now. Carrots, who knows and potatoes, who knows.  I spend all day Tuesday making pickles!  Everything seems to be doing pretty well though except for some beetles we had on our sweet potatoes.

Re: How is your garden doing?

  • So funny you just posted this - I was wondering earlier if any other bumpies have gardens and what they're growing.

We have tons of herbs.  I made some pesto on Monday.  I also made a chocolate zucchini bundt cake last night.  We have some new zucchini growing, and we have lots of green tomatoes.  We did heirloom tomatoes this year along with Romas and grape tomatoes.  Our raspberry bush has finished bearing fruit, but we have a second variety that is supposed to give fruit late summer.  And just to see if he could get it to grow, DH planted corn - we have one stalk growing!

  • I wish I was diligent enough to have a garden! My current garden is about 3 miles down the road inside my local Harris Teeter.

So jealous of your fresh garden goods! Yum

  • I'm the OP of that gardening post. Good call on the check-in :) So far we haven't had anything terrible interesting to report because ours has only been in a little over a month (it was our first year). We've been harvesting mainly herbs like basil and sage. But we do have some cute little baby eggplants and just today I spotted this pepper! It's 1/2 inch long!Image and video hosting by TinyPic

I think I see a tumbleweed!  BP, we've had 100 degree temps here in the midwest all week and I want you to know I have so much admiration for those of you who live in the Southwest.  I don't know how you do it.  You must be superhuman.

  • Ugh, ours is doing terrible! We have had the worst problems with squirrels! We've gotten approximately TWO cherry tomatoes- that's it!! Fortunately, with a little rearranging, I think everything is squirrel-free, so we should have some delicious Better Boy tomatoes and green bell peppers soon!

  • We planted a few veggies this spring: Artichokes, tomatoes, and zucchinis.  And we planted lots of herbs: Basil, sage, rosemary, sunflowers, green onions, and mint. The herbs seem to be doing OK but the veggies are all getting eaten by birds and rabbits that sneak into our yard! We are also in a severe drought, so it's been a challenge keeping them watered. I've decided next year I'm going to just stick to herbs since I can keep them in large terracotta pots on our patio.

I would love tips for warding off birds and rabbits, if anyone has any. I tried using "liquid fence" and getting a fake owl but to no avail. I'm new to gardening since I lived in an apartment in Cali before moving to our house with yard in Austin.

  • This is my first year doing a vegetable garden and it's doing really well! We have Roma & Rutgers tomatoes (almost ripe), oregano, basil, scallions, and red/yellow/green peppers. I am going to need to figure out how to make homemade sauce from fresh tomatoes. I've done it from canned, but I always use a mix of puree, paste, and crushed tomatoes. Should be interesting!

I just wanted to say that the description of your garden made me hungry for spaghetti, but most importantly I want you to know I REALLY love the photo of your dog in your siggy! SO CUTE!

  • I love gardening!!Smile

    I have a few things:

Crookneck sqaush is coming in out the wazoo!!

    Japanese cucumber is going crazy

Big boy tomatoes are coming in fast

Green peppers are doing well - yellow peppers...not so much

We also have rosemary and chives - already pulled lavender and oregano because they were taking over! I have them drying out in our shed.

This fall DH and I are thinking about expanding our raised bed to grow more things next year. It's really fun and helps take your mind off things.

It's totally worth it in the winter. It's honestly not so bad if you can be inside, but I feel bad for DH, since he's outside about 50% of the day for work.

  • Unfortunately here in South FL it is way to hot right now so my garden is pretty much dead except my hot peppers. At the end of October I'll be able to start planting again.

Thanks! She is such a sweet dog. Smile Good thing she's cute because she gets herself into lots of trouble! Recently she was wildly running around the yard and ran right into the garden bed and broke 2 tomato plants. Luckily we planted way too many this year, so I still have lots left.

  • My garden is coming along, but the heat is doing it no favors! It seems like this year the weather is against it. In the spring we had freezing weather and we had over night frost well into May.

  • We are having the opposite problem here in Oregon. Its been WET AND COLD. Hardly any summer. I don't know HOW our garden is getting enough sun. Things are growing, but pretty slow. The zucchinis are tiny and we just got the first ripe tomato. The lettuce is doing the best. Beans...may or may not make it.
