I took DD to her pedi yesterday for her 4 month appt. She's still pretty small, but growing alot, she was born at 4 lbs 12 oz (5 weeks early) and now she's 12 lbs 11 oz. She seems to get enough to eat. My mom is anxious for her to gain weight faster because she is having surgery in the late winter/early spring for her kidney and she wants her bigger for the anesthesia.
So anyway...
I asked the pedi when we could start dd on rice cereal. He started to say that we could start her now, and if she does well on that, start veggies. Then he asked if we had a family history of ANY allergies (not just food) or asthma. Well of course we do have allergies....seasonal, etc. Who doesn't? So he then said, because of that, she is more prone to food allergies and we should wait until 6 months (6 weeks from now) to start feeding her any solids at all.
So WDYT?
Re: WDYT Re:Rice Cereal/First Foods
I'd listen to the pedi and wait till 6 months.
is your mom a dr? or the anesthesiologist (sp?)
listen to the dr.
ummm... listen to the pedi (seems like a no brainer to me).
PS - we have no food allergies or asthma in our families.
I agree that listening to the pedi sounds like a no-brainer. I do however, have my own brain and am occasionally known to come up with my own ideas. Just wondered what you girls thought/had heard. Medicine is a practice, not an exact science, just like when we were pregnant we heard opinions that varied from OB to OB, it's the same with pedi's. So I just wondered what your pedi's had told you/what information you knew of on this subject.
One of the reasons I questioned my pedi is because this is the same dr who told us to give her fruit juice at 7 weeks old for constipation...so I got some contradictory information when he told me that she shouldn't be started on rice cereal or veggies yet.
MattsWifey-My Pedi said ALL allergies, not just food allergies...like to dust, pet hair, grass, mold, pollen, etc. I would be surprised to hear of somebody's family who didn't have an allergy to any of these things. I am sure they exist...I just don't think it's very common.
To the person who posted with actual useful information about the World Health organization reccomending nothing other than breast milk or formula until 6 months of age, thank you. That's the kind of info I was looking for.
