2nd Trimester

Phenergan anyone?

Does anyone else take phenergan?  I just wondered what it's word on the street is.  It really helps me to take it the night before a busy day at work.  I tend not to feel yucky the next day.  I also sleep very well when I take it and don't drive after popping the pill.  I'm going to ask my doc today, why he prescribes it without refills when I ask for it.  I've been pretty nauseated my whole pregnancy thus far, so it's helped me.  I like it better than Zofran because it doesn't "stop me up".

 Your thoughts?

Re: Phenergan anyone?

  • I was on phenergan from weeks 7-19. I stopped taking it when I discovered it was a class C drug, and I just didn't think the risks outweighed the rewards at that time. The whole point is to make me not throw up, and I'm not doing that as much anymore. The nausea I can deal with. I'd recommend doing a cost-benefit analysis (sorry, I always use economics terminology!); if you need the phenergan to keep food down, then keep taking it. Your baby needs fluids and nutrients to develop. But if it's just to help nausea, my personal opinion is that we just need to suck it up and deal with it instead of putting the babies at risk. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

  • I took phenergan from wk 6-12 because otherwise I would be up all night vomiting.  Now I just take zofran on days that I work (3days/wk) because I dont want to be vomiting along with my patients.

  • I was on this as well as about 4-5 other meds for 7-10 weeks but i have reactions to phenergan when i'm pregnant that it makes me 10x more sick.  I suffer/ed from HG  and the only thing that works for me is the melt away Zofran tabs. Hey have never really given me a issue with potty though.  But there is always that cholace ( i spelled it wrong) to take too if you'd rather go zofran.   I only can get up to 2 refills at a time of them though.  I preferred the phenergan before i was pregnant because i liked that it made me sleepy though lol. I was given it previous because i suffer from severe migraines to the point of going to the ER a lot.

  • I take it at night too.   I use Zofran during the day.

  • I was taking it at night for a month, and Zofran during the day. Now I'm just on Zofran 3x a day. My OBs were okay with the Phenergan but when I switched to my midwives (change of hospital as well) they aren't big fans unless you REALLY need it. When it comes to the Class C drugs I sort of take the stand of if it helps you feel like a human being then take it if there's nothing else that helps. I still take an Allergy D pill almost daily, and did throughout my pregnancy with DD, or else the drainage made me throw up.

Oh and the reason OB's don't give refills usually for nausea meds is because they want to discuss your need for them each month before subscribing it. That way we aren't unnecessarily on the meds for the whole pregnancy if we don't need to be. At least once a week I forget to take my afternoon dosage of Zofran and within 3 hours of missing it I start feeling sick again so I know I still need it.

  • Thanks Mamas!

I'm behind because I do not know what a class C drug is...  I will look that up.

I've been hesitant to research phenergan on the internet because I needed the drug before and didn't want to worry when my ob said it was okay to take.  My doubt came from the label that says to check with your doctor before taking if you are pregnant.  That was an orange flag to me.

Now, taking half a pill at night really helps me the next day.  I can muster the strength to push though and tough it out if I have to.  It's just been very hard because I work 5 days a week and I'm in and out of HOT garages (sales job).

I don't think I'll pick up my next prescription of it.  I have plenty of zofran and I can get the collease (sp?) too!

    Thanks again!!
