Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I've hit a wall

At work that is.  Basically I work in DC and my husband is a marine and we have our daughter in daycare.  Well when I came back to work, my work claims to have this whole work life balance deal.  Well I, because of my commute have been having to leave my poor LO in daycare close to 12 hours a day.  She doesn't nap well there, and when I get home she goes to sleep and then is up all night long.  So I asked my job to see about either letting me go part time, take a step down and work something with few hours or morning hours or allowing me to change my hours from 8-5 to 7-4.  They came back yesterday and told me no, because my charges are here till 5 or later.  When I got up to leave yesterday at 5 I looked around and all my charges had already left.  I've been looking for a job closer to home, but everything pays next to nothing and it doesn't even really match what we pay in daycare.  Today I'd like to just get up and walk out.  And say enjoy figuring out everything that needs to be done, I'm going home to work on the life part of that work life balance.

Re: I've hit a wall

  • I'm right there with you if it makes you feel better :)  With my commute, LO is in daycare almost 12 hours.  I'm exhausted because DH's work hours are even worse so I'm pretty much taking care of LO myself, and I've been looking for months for a job closer to home but can't even find anything to apply for that wouldn't come with a 50% pay cut.  Good luck to you though.

  • I hear you!

While I was still on maternity leave I came in to speak to my boss about going to reduced hours just til the end of the year. The answer I got was 'no.'

So back to work I came, and after a month of the rushing/working/stressing and struggling we figured out how to make our budget work with me staying home. Thankfully my hubby's salary can cover us with some cut backs, plus it helps that we are still renting and have no car payments (read - old cars) and we recently paid off all of our debt.

And so I gave notice - and surprise surprise - they came back to me and asked if I'd stay with the reduced hours I'd originally asked for.

I'm still leaving but funny how flexible they became once I was leaving.

I wish you the best of luck.
