Diapers in the water?

So I'm gonna take DS to the pool for the first time tomorrow, but I was wondering if I need to get him some of the little swimmers or if I should just keep him in a regular diaper. My friend said she just uses regular diapers for her DD. What are your recommendations? Oh and any recommendations for baby suntan lotion?? Thanks mommas!

Re: Diapers in the water?

  • Nutragena Pure and Free SunBLOCK, and I can't answer your other question.  We have little swimmers, but that's bc someone gave me some.

I haven't used regular diapers in water with DD but if I remember correctly from my babysitting days, it seems like the gel stuff gets all over them. I remember thinking the diapers were pretty gross when swimming in them. We use swim diapers with DD.
  • Thanks gals!

  • We accidently put a pull-up on our DS once instead of a little swimmer (they were both Diego!), and it was a total mess. The pull-up swelled up with water like crazy and after awhile the gel inside started to leak out into the pool. When we went to change him after the gel got over everything. From my experience, I definitely recommend using a proper swim diaper. We like Little Swimmers.

  • I used the Huggies snug and dry on my DS in the pool because the swimmers dont yet come in his size. and we didnt experience any gel stuff or anything just a big fat diaper full of water.

  • not sure if you're going out before tomorrows swim, but we found baby baithing suits at target.  They are designed to hold in pee and poop without blowing up or leaking.  They are machine washable and reusable (cloth).  We also have lil swimmers, but they are still a bit big.  We used regular diapers, but like pps, we found they blew up, weighed down and got messy for LO and for the pool- that gel gets everywhere!

Our pedi said no sunscreen for awhile and no sunblock until 6 mos (he said basically just cover him up and stay in the shade- we can use block next year)

I've used the huggies lil snugglers and didn't have any problems.  I have no idea what the gel is...never seen it.

  • We use the little swimmers too. We mainly keep him in the shade but if I have to use sunblock, I use Neutragena Pure and Free. I'd rather have something on than nothing if avoiding the sun is completely impossible.

The gel typically will eventually explode out of the regular diaper. It'll hold a solid amount of water but eventually it gives in!

Baby, you've got the sort of eyes that tell me tales...

  • I took Nate the other day and  put a regular diaper on this time and put the Pampers Splashers on on top of it. (On previous trips I had just used the Splashers and didn't feel comfortable that it would do its job because it was loose. Those were short pool trips!) The new system worked well. He was only in the water for about 45 minutes - 1 hour and I had no problems with gel coming out of the regular diaper. I don't know if doubling up did me any good, but it made me feel better! We use the Aveeno sunblock.
  • kinda late but ..
I bought my LO a swim diaper (kushies?) . We change right before going into the water.
It's pretty thin and does not absorb any water. It is made only to keep poop out of the water so you can't travel with it on. I got it in a medium thinking she can grow into it but it fit well as there is elastic around the legs to make sure she doesn't leak.

  • I bought a swim diaper too. I love it. We use neutrogena pure and free for baby. Our pedi said he would rather see us use sunblock then have a baby with a burn.
  • I just use a regular diaper since the swimmers don't fit yet.  Pedi said to avoid the sunblock unless we are going to be around water or white sand since it reflects, so we use Neutrogena Free & Pure and he gets a good bath right after to wash off the sunblock.
