Breastfeeding

increase evening supply?

I have low supply issues ever since we start breastfeeding which was at 6 weeks (LO was in the NICU 2.5 weeks and then not allowed to breastfeed until 6 weeks). Anyway, I have finally gotten my supply up. In the mornings she can eat and will go 2 hours and when I pump at work I get between 2.5-4.5 oz, with the most being in the morning. But in the evenings (during the week or on the weekends), I just can't satisfy her. She will eat for over an hour and still want to eat (which is fine with me) but eventually she will get frustrated and refuse. Usually I am able to only supplement her (breastmilk if I have it or formula if not) on her last feed and it's usually 2-3 oz. I do pump if I have to supplement and I usually get about an ounce. I have been do everything thing I can to increase supply in gereral over the past month.

I know it would be good to feed her as much as possible during the day when my supply is good so she won't be so ravenous in the evening but she sleeps off and on until noonish and will not wake up to eat, she also STTN. (When she does wake up, she will eat enough to just satisfy her and go back to sleep, she will not let me keep feeding her).

Any suggestions on how I can either get her to eat more during the day or increase my supply in the evening? TIA!

Re: increase evening supply?

  • Have you tried eating oatmeal at least once a day? Drinking plenty of water? I take fenugreek which you can buy at GNC and some other stores I believe. Also, are you on birth control...some combination pills can decrease supply in some women.

  • Oh, and also there is a big 3 month growth spurt so maybe things will get better on their own in a week or so.
