How is your LO doing with toys?

As far as grabbing, playing, putting things in his/her mouth, etc.?

DD reaches out for things but still can't maneuver anything very well. It's like she doesn't quite get that she grabbed it. I have a set of teething keys for her and she's always hitting herself in the face with them, and when I give her a teething ring or Sophie the giraffe, she just flails it around a bit then tosses it. She does try to put things in her mouth but usually just gets frustrated because she can't maneuver it the right way to get a good chomp. She loves stuffed animals and burp cloths, because she can shove those in her mouth easily, lol. Also, her hands/arms still do that shaky thing when she's trying to grab something.

Is this all normal? How is your babe doin'? Any tips for getting LOs more confident in playing, other than practice?

  • All of this sounds exactly like my LO. I think it's completely normal and the fact that your LO is trying and practicing, that's awesome.

  • Sounds exactly like my LO as well.  It's pretty cute to watch them try to figure it all out =)

  • DD is pretty good at getting things in her mouth.  She can actually put her pacifier in her mouth on her own.
  • the whole hand-mouth thing just clicked one day for DS... Sophie is his best friend.  He thinks he's cool and pulls his pacifier out of his mouth but can't put it back in, haha.

He does get mad though, because he thinks everything that he can reach with his hands should be able to reach his mouth, so when playing on his playmat, he yells when the rings won't go in his mouth! He's getting quite the 'tude!

  • I think Luke is pretty similar. In the last week or so I've discovered if I put him sitting up and sit behind him for support he can now start to reach out and pick up toys like his elephant and crinkly book.

  • He has been putting them his mouth for about a month now. Before he was just hitting Sophie on his head. Yesterday he pulled the paci out of his mouth, but could not get it back in. Most toys go in his mouth, some he shakes like his keys.

  • My LO is an "old" March baby.  In the last few weeks she has gotten the coordination thing down much better.  She pops out her paci when she feels like it and now is able to put it back in, most of the time.  Everything goes in the mouth.  She reaches for everything and doesn't miss when grabbing.  Like the PP it just clicked one day.  It's a relief that she can entertain herself in her carseat now if I load her lap up with toys!

  • Sounds just like Jamie!  Cloth items like burp cloths and stuffed animals go over a bit better now b/c he can hang onto them.  We have these "linkadoo" things (5.00 at walmart) that he can hold when i link a few together b/c they are just right for him to fit his fingers or hand through.  I LOVE those things, I have some in his baby bag, and everywhere.

lol, C does this, too and it cracks me up! I hear her grunting up a storm from the other room and come in to check on her to see that she's got a hold of one of her hanging toys and can't get it into her mouth.

LOL DD does the same thing! She gets SO mad when she can't fit her ENTIRE crinkly book in her mouth.

She's been grabbing at toys and putting them in her mouth since the beginning of June. At first it was just out of curiousity, but now it is because she is teething ands she's just FRANTIC to shove everything in her mouth. She's not into Sophie so much, she's got this little jittery bug that vibrates when you pull the string that she LOVES. DH got her some teething rings last night, so we'll see how that goes.
