NBR...I want to learn to sew

My mom bought me a sewing machine for Christmas because I had told her that I wanted to learn to sew.  Well obviously, I was a little busy around that time and just haven't had a chance to look into anything.  Does anyone know or have recommendations for classes or places to go?  I think I need some hands on practice...I have absolutely no experience!

  • I don't know what area you are in but look for quilting stores (not big chain stores like Beverly's Fabrics but smaller places that only sell fabrics and sewing supplies). Usually most quilting stores that sell sewing machines also offer classes. They offer a lot of quilting classes but also basic sewing, clothes making, etc. If you're near the south bay I recommend going to Eddie's Quilting Bee, they offer great classes.

ETA: If you are feeling adventurous take a look at your machine's manual. Usually they come with introductory projects to get you started using the machine. Also, youtube has a lot of instructional videos.

  • Sewing a quilt is on my 30 b4 30 list. If you end up taking a class I would love a review! I am going to attempt it on my own but I might have to seek help!

  • Stonemountain & Daughters in Berkeley has a big studio/classroom onsite but also a list of teachers in the area.  You can find classes for all kinds of things- from beginners to things like pattern making.  Also, they have pretty amazing selection of fabrics.

  • We must have the same mom, because I also got a sewing machine for Christmas, after I made an off handed comment that I wanted to learn. I haven't touched it yet. I have several projects pinned on Pinterest that I want to try too, so I better get on it soon. :)

Meissner offers classes https://www.meissnersewing.com/cartgenie/subcategory.asp?category=17 They are off of El Camino and 80. They have one starting in August, and I thought about taking it, but haven't made up my mind yet.

  • I saw a place on Groupon this morning called the Tin Thimble in Loomis.  Looks like 50% off a class.  https://www.groupon.com/deals/the-tin-thimble?c=image&utm_content=all-deals_sacramento&date=20110726&division=sacramento&p=5&s=body&sid=10934410&utm_campaign=the-tin-thimble&utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&user=01ad383902295d939af397a2764dc9ceeab3cc752a486e2c21f9d39cd8696cdf

Triad Plus in Roseville offers classes sometimes.  I think that they have the best selection of fabrics for projects for the home.  They have some good sales once in a while too.

  • A former nestie (sfgirl75) took lessons from someone via Craigslist, IIRC.  I think she either put up an ad, or responded to an ad, and met the lady at her home, brought her machine, and they did one or a few lessons on using the machine, etc and made a diaper bag together, I think.  I remember thinking I should look into it, but never did.  I hardly use my sewing machine, and when I do it's for simple enough projects I've (so far) been able to figure it out using my manual.  GL!
