Baby Names

Reece vs. Rhys

We've decided on the name Reece/Rhys for our son! I prefer the original spelling of Rhys, but our last name is very difficult to spell and pronounce (It's Slavic- think lots of consonants) and so my husband would prefer Reece since it's easily recognized.

Thoughts/Opinions? Are both acceptable?

Re: Reece vs. Rhys

  • Like Rhys do not like Reece.  The c is bad.

  • I like Reece. I think people would constantly spell the name wrong if you went with Rhys.

  • Rhys is a better spelling for a boy.  If I see Reece I tend to think girl.  I really like the name Rhys for a boy, good choice.

  • Rhys.  I think this spelling is starting to become semi common in the U.S.  He will probably have to spell it for people, but it is easy enough and should catch on quickly.
  • Right now, Rhys is our top boys name.  I think Reece looks like a girls name.

  • Rhys is the correct spelling of the name, so go with this one.

Reece just makes me think of peanut butter and chocolate!

The same as Reese. It is the traditional spelling of the Welsh boy name. Very popular in Wales.

Agreed.  I think that would be mispronounced and confusing to most people.

  • My daughter is Reese  and her name gets misspelled a lot and they put Reece.

So with that in mind I vote for Rhys - the Welsh spelling for a boy.

  • I hate it spelt Rhys
  • I like the name. While Rhys may be the "traditional" spelling, I don't like it. He will probably be called Rice since it's not a super popular spelling in the US. That being said, I don't like Reece either. Guess I'm not much help.

Rhys is actually more popular that Reese and just about 30 spots below Reece. Reese is the least popular spelling for a boy.

Both Reese and Reece are loosing popularity for boys, while Rhys is gaining popularity fairly quickly.

That's good to know. I do really like the name so I guess out of the 3 spellings, I'd pick Rhys. I have to admit, they 1st time I saw it (a friend of mine named her son that), I thought, she named him Rice? lol

Yes. tradition isn't always the best IMO. I like the name, what about Reese. A guy I went to high school with was named Reese. The 's' doesn't seem as girly as the 'c' to me for some reason.

This.  It seems to be popping up more and more, and frankly it is only 4 letters so it isn't that hard to figure out.

  • Love the name but these days I would use Rhys for a boy and Reece for a girl... just what I first think when I look at it
  • Rhys! Rhys just looks more masculine to me. Reece looks girly.
  • Personally, I think Reece looks more feminine than Reese. I'd prefer Rhys over both of them, but the name is NMS in general.
